History of Jagannath Rath Yatra

The festival has been celebrated for centuries and represents the spirit of the Lord coming out of the temple to bless all devotees, regardless of caste, creed, or social status.
Significance of Rath Yatra
Jagannath Rath Yatra is devotion, equality and the divine connection of God and humanity. Pulling the huge wooden chariots is considered auspicious and is believed to wash away sins while bringing prosperity and peace to the world.
The festival also upholds the principle of inclusiveness so that everybody who wants to join the procession and ask for Lord Jagannath’s blessings is allowed.
Major rituals of Rath Yatra
There are some sacred rituals performed during the festival:
Pahandi: The ritual procession of the deities from the sanctum to the chariots.
Chhera Pahanra: The King of Puri sweeps the chariots with a golden broom and displays humility before the Lord.
Rath Pulling: Thousands of devotees pull the giant chariots through the streets to Gundicha Temple. The deities stay a week at Gundicha Temple before returning in Bahuda Yatra.
Suna Besha: Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are adorned with gold ornaments after they return.
