Land Rover has announced that production of the Discovery Sport will end in December 2026, and is the end of an 11-year journey for one of the brand’s most successful compact luxury SUVs. It is a part of Jaguar Land Rover's long-term product strategy as they prepare the company for its next generation of vehicles.
Although the Discovery Sport is still available in many European countries, factory orders have already been closed in many European markets, including Germany, Spain and France. Production is slowly winding down ahead of the final assembly at the end of 2026.
A Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) spokesperson confirmed to Autocar UK that the Discovery Sport is coming to the end of its planned life cycle.
The Discovery Sport was announced in 2015 as the successor to the popular Freelander. Off-road capabilities and premium comfort and off-road capabilities combined to make it one of Land Rover's biggest commercial successes, and it was designed so that the SUV was a good luxury SUV that can accommodate up to seven passengers in some configurations.
Its popularity soared very soon after launch. Land Rover sold over 122k Discovery Sports in 2016. The model quickly became a flagship of the Land Rover portfolio to people who desired the company’s refinement and ruggedness.
We have seen numerous updates to the Discovery Sport since then, in terms of its look and feel, better interiors, enhanced infotainment systems, mild hybrid powertrains and advanced driver assistance features. These upgrades kept the SUV in the game even though there was more competition in the premium compact SUV market.
While the Discovery Sport is retiring, Land Rover has said that two closely related models -- the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar -- will remain in the company’s portfolio. Both will receive updates and upgrades as JLR expands its electrification scheme and develops its luxury SUV offerings.
Jaguar Land Rover is investing heavily in electric mobility and future-ready platforms with several new electric models to come out in Range Rover, Defender and Discovery generations.
For existing Discovery Sport owners, the end of production is unlikely to affect after-sales support. Land Rover will provide service, spare parts and maintenance support for years after production ends as standard industry practice.
When the Discovery Sport is finished in the production line, it marks the end of a landmark chapter in Land Rover’s history, as the Discovery Sport is going to leave the production line as a landmark moment for the company. It was an important part of the brand’s global customer base that has been expanded by the SUV, which was a large part of the brand’s growth strategy and is still considered one of the best commercial successes of today’s modern models of the company.
