Mahindra will launch a CNG-powered version of its compact SUV, the XUV 3XO, in India on October 15, 2026. The new vehicle could expand the SUV’s powertrain options which are petrol, diesel and electric now.
According to NDTV Auto on October 8, the teaser from Mahindra has fuelled speculation of when the CNG version will be launched. But Mahindra has not given us any details about the new model, including the specifications, price and variants.
If it is launched, the XUV 3XO CNG might appeal to owners who want an SUV with a lower running cost than a petrol-powered vehicle. What will be the new model?
Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG (Expected Engine And Transmission).
The CNG version is expected to use the existing 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with multi-point fuel injection (MPFI). Its petrol configuration produces 111 hp and 200 Nm of torque.
Mahindra has a more powerful 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine with 131 hp and a 1.5-litre diesel engine in the XUV 3XO line-up. However, the MPFI unit is considered the most likely for the CNG version as the adaptation of this type of engine to CNG is less challenging than a direct-injection engine.
The CNG model is expected to come with a manual gearbox. An automatic transmission could also be considered since automatic CNG vehicles are increasingly available but there is no official confirmation of this option.
The engine power and torque figures when using CNG have not been announced. Buyers will have to wait for the manufacturer's specifications to know how performance might differ from the petrol version.
CNG tank placement and boot space: What Should We Expect?
One of the key questions of the upcoming SUV is how Mahindra will accommodate the CNG cylinder without compromising practicality.
The XUV 3XO already has a relatively small boot space over other competitors. Adding a conventional CNG cylinder might reduce the space to carry luggage, so the placement of the tank is important for families and frequent travellers.
Mahindra could explore a twin-cylinder arrangement, similar to the approach used in some CNG cars from Tata Motors and Hyundai. Such systems can help make better use of available space, although the final design for the XUV 3XO remains unknown.
The automaker will also have to adjust the engine management system and other parts of the vehicle to handle the CNG setup.
The tank configuration as well as luggage capacity and other mechanical changes are still to be finalized.
Expected Price And Competition
Mahindra has not announced the price of the XUV 3XO CNG. But Autocar India has said that the variant could fetch around ₹1 lakh price premium over the equivalent petrol version. This is just an estimate, not an official price.
The existing XUV 3XO range competes with compact SUVs such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet. Of these, the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza are major competitors for buyers looking for factory-fitted CNG options.
A CNG-powered XUV 3XO could offer Mahindra an opportunity to reach customers who want the styling and features of a compact SUV with their fuel costs managed. The actual savings would depend on CNG prices, driving distance, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs.
The new version could also enable Mahindra to increase its choice of alternative fuel options as automakers prepare for tighter corporate average fuel efficiency (CAFE) requirements.
What Buyers Should Watch For
The October 15 launch should provide greater insight about the XUV 3XO CNG, but customers should look beyond the launch date when evaluating the vehicle.
The most important details will be the official price, certified fuel efficiency, CNG tank arrangement, boot capacity, transmission options and available safety and comfort features.
Warranty coverage and service requirements will also be taken into account when making a buy.
Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG is the expected one to come to the compact SUV market. The production launch is likely to be made and it will be a new factory-fitted CNG option in a segment where options are very limited. The final specifications and pricing will determine how competitive it is against established rivals.
