Mercedes-Benz is looking to make an electric model available in India with the GLC Electric. The all electric luxury SUV will be launched in India on November 4, 2026, shortly after Diwali weekend. Bookings for the new electric SUV will start in early October.
Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric will be manufactured locally at Chakan Plant in Pune. For the Indian market, the luxury carmaker will launch the standard-wheelbase GLC 400 4MATIC version first in India. The decision to assemble the model locally will help to secure the exclusivity in the premium electric SUV space in India.
GLC Electric To Arrive In India Quickly After European Debut
Mercedes-Benz has made it very clear the speed at which the electric GLC will be introduced in India. The company says the model will become its fastest global product to reach the Indian market as a locally assembled vehicle coming about six months after sales began in Europe.
The GLC nameplate is already part of Mercedes-Benz’s global SUV portfolio and the electric version brings a dedicated EV platform and a different approach to packaging and technology. Its relatively quick introduction in India highlights the growing importance of electric vehicles in the luxury car segment.
While China will also get a long-wheelbase version of the electric GLC, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that Indian buyers will initially receive the standard-wheelbase model. This version is equipped with the most practical interior packaging and storage to be city-friendly and long-distance-oriented.
More Wheelbase And Practicality Than Petrol GLC
The wheelbase is the main difference between electric and conventional GLC models. The GLC Electric has a 2,972 mm wheelbase, which is 84 mm longer than the petrol-powered GLC. The extra length is from its electric vehicle architecture and is part of the SUV’s cabin and packaging advantage.
There’s practicality as well as practicality with this new electric SUV. The GLC Electric has 570 litres of boot space, which can be increased to 1,740 litres with the rear seats folded. There is also an additional 128-litre storage area to carry luggage and other things.
The interior is expected to be one of the biggest highlights of the SUV. Mercedes-Benz has equipped the model with a massive 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen stretching across the dashboard. The setup integrates the digital instrument cluster, central infotainment system and a display for the front passenger.
Even in a world of screens, there are still physical controls and rotary knobs in the cabin. The digital displays and the classic controls as a combination of technology and everyday use is intended to be the perfect mix of both; the modern technology of this combination and the old-fashioned control system.
Mercedes GLC 400 4MATIC EV: Battery, Range And Performance
The India-bound GLC 400 4MATIC Electric has a 94 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack. The battery powers two electric motors, one motor sitting on each axle. This gives the SUV an all-wheel-drive system.
The combined output is 483-489 bhp or 360 kW and maximum torque is 800 Nm. With this power output, the electric SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in a claimed 4.3 seconds. Its top speed is 210 kmph.
Range is also a major selling point. Mercedes-Benz claims a WLTP-certified range of up to 715 km on a single charge. The actual range achieved by customers in India could vary with weather conditions, driving speed, temperature, traffic and other factors as well.
The GLC Electric also supports DC fast charging up to 330 kW. With a sufficiently powerful charging station, the technology is intended to provide a considerable driving range during relatively short charging stops. Actual charging rates will be dependent on the charger, battery performance and other factors.
Rear-Wheel Steering And Premium EV Technology
The new electric GLC also has rear-axle steering as standard. The technology can turn the rear wheels in relation to the front wheels, helping manoeuvrability at low speed but also providing stability and agility at high speed.
So rear-wheel steering for an SUV of this size is particularly useful for tight urban areas and parking spots. It also complements the GLC Electric's performance-oriented powertrain and all-wheel-drive setup.
Mercedes GLC Electric Rivals In India
When the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric is released it will enter India's growing premium electric SUV segment. Models like the BMW iX3 and Audi Q6 e-tron will likely be in the same general luxury electric SUV market.
Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced the India-specific price of the GLC Electric. Details on pricing, variants, equipment and booking terms will be announced closer to its November 4 launch.
With local assembly, up to 715 km range and almost 500 bhp of power, as well as a technology-laden cabin, the GLC Electric will be another significant addition to Mercedes-Benz India’s growing EV range. The launch of bookings in October will give prospective buyers the first chance to reserve the new luxury electric SUV ahead of the festive season launch.
