On September 5, Maruti Suzuki will introduce the new Baleno with premium hatchback with redesigned styling, new features and interior upgrades. The new Maruti Baleno facelift has already been tested on several occasions and spy photos have given our first indication of what changes are to be made in the new model.
The Baleno has always been Maruti Suzuki's most popular offering in the premium hatchback category with Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20 and Toyota Glanza in the line of sight. With customer expectations still evolving, we expect the facelift to go to the next level and put on the convenience and technology but still keep the basic package on the car.
While Maruti Suzuki has not revealed the entire specifications of the new Baleno, the test vehicles seen during development have generated expectations about possible exterior and interior changes.
Updated Exterior Design Expected
The biggest visual changes are expected at the front of the hatchback. From available spy photos, the new Baleno might get a redesigned front bumper, a redesigned grille and a redesigned daytime running light layout.
These changes can give the hatchback a fresh look while maintaining the familiar proportions of the current-generation Baleno. Maruti Suzuki is probably to avoid any massive changes to the overall silhouette because the facelift will be an update not an all-new generation.
From the side, one of the most dramatic changes would be the new alloy wheel design of 16-inch dimensions. The overall profile and body shape should largely remain unchanged.
Back at the rear, the updates might be more subtle. The Baleno facelift could see a redesigned rear bumper and the taillight design will be used and the taillight design will be the same. This would give Maruti Suzuki the chance to freshen up the car without significantly changing the car’s appearance.
Interior Could Receive Fresh Theme
The cabin is also going to see some noticeable changes. Based on the test vehicles, Maruti Suzuki might introduce a new interior theme and update the dashboard and centre console.
The present Baleno with a relatively well-equipped cabin is already a good deal better than the new ones, but a facelift would bring the new model closer to the new products and more convenient.
A new dashboard might have an updated design that might feel more modern and a redesigned centre console would make the whole experience more comfortable. However, the interior design and material changes will only be unveiled when Maruti Suzuki officially unveils the car.
New Features Could Be Added
The feature list is expected to be one of the most important aspects of the upcoming Baleno facelift. The current model, introduced in 2022, had several great features (head-up display, 360-degree camera).
At the time of launch, the Baleno had the equipment to work in with in that category. But the premium hatchback market has grown and the consumers are looking for more comfort and convenience than they used to get in the first place.
The facelift could also feature a sunroof, ventilated seats, wireless phone charger and a larger touchscreen infotainment system. Currently, the Baleno uses a 9-inch touchscreen and a better display could boost the vehicle's technology profile.
To be sure, Maruti Suzuki has not confirmed these features. The final feature list may vary when the car is released.
Several existing features are expected to continue. These could be the head-up display, automatic climate control, connected car technology, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the 6-speaker Arkamys audio system.
Other practical features likely to remain include rear Type-A and Type-C charging ports, a 60:40 split-folding rear seat and rear wiper with washer.
Safety Equipment May Receive Update
In the facelift, safety could also get more attention. There are reports that front parking sensors may be added to the equipment list.
The current safety package is expected to remain with features like the 360-degree camera, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, electronic stability programme and hill hold assist. Isofix child-seat mounts are also likely to remain available.
The front parking sensors could make the Baleno easier to manoeuvre in crowded urban spaces where tight parking spaces and heavy traffic are common.
The final safety equipment and variant-wise availability will be confirmed by the company at launch.
Powertrain Expected to Remain Unchanged
Mechanically, the upcoming Baleno facelift is not expected to bring much changes. The hatchback is likely to continue with the existing 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The petrol engine provides around 90 hp and is expected to be available with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 5-speed AMT automatic transmission.
Maruti Suzuki is also expected to keep the CNG option. The CNG version produces around 77.5 hp and is currently available with a manual transmission.
Keeping the existing powertrain would allow Maruti Suzuki to focus on design and improvements in design and new features, while still maintaining a familiar and established powertrain lineup.
Competition in the Premium Hatchback Segment
When the new Baleno gets launched, it will still be up against the Tata Altroz and Hyundai i20. It will also compete with the Toyota Glanza which shares its platform and mechanical components with the Baleno.
We find the premium hatchback segment still very much in demand among the consumers looking for compact dimensions, modern technology, practicality and fuel efficiency.
When the new Baleno will be officially launched on September 5, we should see a little more about it. The new design and possible new features and redesigned interior will help Maruti Suzuki to stand out in the market.
But buyers will have to wait for the official launch to see all the specifications, variants, prices and confirmed feature list. If these updates become reality, the Baleno facelift might be more modern and still able to retain the qualities of the now existing model.
