Tata Motors is preparing the next-generation Nexon for the Indian market, with the new compact SUV expected to arrive in 2027. The Nexon has been one of Tata Motors’ most popular models and has always been a strong contender in India’s highly competitive compact SUV market. With the next-generation model, Tata is expected to focus on design, technology, comfort and powertrain updates while retaining the SUV’s familiar identity.
The next generation Tata Nexon will probably undergo a lot of changes compared to the current generation. Details about the underlying architecture are not yet available, but Tata could either develop a new platform or localize and update the existing architecture thoroughly. The next SUV will also grow in size; it should have a bigger road presence and there will be more space in the cabin.
Sharper Design Expected For 2027 Tata Nexon
Exterior design is likely to be one of the most noticeable changes on the next-generation Nexon. Tata is expected to keep the basic styling of the SUV but bring in more modern and sharp elements. The new model could have redesigned doors, a completely redesigned front fascia and an updated rear section.
These changes will give the Nexon a more premium look and bring it closer to Tata Motors’ new design language. The company has been trying to create distinctive styling elements in its new SUVs and the new Nexon could take inspiration from larger models in the Tata line-up.
The larger dimensions would also make the 2027 Nexon look bigger than the outgoing one. The exact exterior dimensions, wheelbase and design details are still not officially reported.
Cabin could see a major technology upgrade.
The interior is going to undergo a much more radical overhaul. The next-generation Nexon will have a bigger touchscreen infotainment system, a redesigned dashboard and a new steering wheel. Tata will also add more connected technology to the SUV.
Extra features like an electronic parking brake, powered front seats and a panoramic sunroof are expected to be included in higher versions. There will also be premium equipment from Tata’s bigger SUVs like the Sierra that will be included on the next generation Nexon.
A more technology-driven cabin would allow Tata to compete with newer rivals that have increasingly moved towards larger displays, connected-car functions and more convenience features. Improved materials, storage solutions and cabin ergonomics could also be part of the next generation update.
Petrol, Diesel and CNG Powertrains Have Also Been Updated.
The powertrain range will undergo significant changes, too. The familiar 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine will continue, but Tata could work on improving performance, refinement and efficiency.
Diesel is also expected to be part of the Nexon's powertrain portfolio, possibly with a revised transmission option. A diesel engine will continue to be available to Tata customers who regularly drive long distances and prefer diesel-powered compact SUVs.
Another possibility is to add a naturally aspirated petrol engine. Tata could perhaps introduce such an option based on the powertrain strategy seen with the Sierra. This is an expectation but not a given specification.
The CNG version is also expected to be brought in to serve as fuel-efficient substitutes for the petrol and diesel versions. Tata's CNG portfolio has expanded dramatically in the last few years and it is also a big part of its strategy in the mass-market segment, making the fuel option really important.
Nexon EV Could Get A Larger Battery.
The electric version of the Nexon should get its own set of important updates in the future. The next generation of Nexon EV may have a bigger battery pack and longer driving range than the current version.
A bigger battery would make the electric SUV more suitable for customers looking for greater flexibility between charging stops. Tata may also add improvements to charging technology, efficiency and software as part of the next-generation EV package.
But we have not yet seen the battery capacity, claimed range and charging specifications. That will be determined soon though and should be reported at the launch.
2027 Launch Expected
The new Tata Nexon is expected to arrive in 2027, although the company has not yet announced an official launch date. Tata Motors will also launch a few other products before the new Nexon arrives in showrooms: Safari EV, Tigor and others.
The next generation Nexon will therefore have to wait until 2027 before making its debut, and by then competition in India’s compact SUV segment might be even stronger, as manufacturers will continue to develop petrol, CNG, hybrid, and electric versions of the product.
The new Nexon will be a key product for Tata Motors as the nameplate is familiar in the Indian market. A bigger design, a premium cabin, new technology and a broader powertrain plan could make the next-generation SUV drastically different from the current model.
As of now, most specifications are based on expectations and reports rather than official confirmation. Tata Motors will probably give more information about the next-generation Nexon closer to launch.
