Tata Motors has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme to four more electric vehicles in India. The Tata Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV & Harrier EV can now be purchased through the BaaS model, with customers paying a lower upfront price for the vehicle and paying separately for battery usage.
With the latest addition, Tata Motors now has its BaaS option available across its entire electric vehicle portfolio. It was available on models such as the Tiago EV and Punch EV before. The addition of some of Tata's bigger and newer electric SUVs into the battery-as-a-service model is a new addition.
The BaaS model is designed to separate the cost of the vehicle from the battery. Instead of having customers pay the entire battery cost as part of the initial vehicle purchase, users pay a separate usage charge based on the distance traveled. This lowers the initial purchase price, but buyers need to account for the additional battery usage payments over the period of ownership.
Tata Nexon EV BaaS Price
Tata Nexon EV is the most affordable among the four new models under the BaaS programme. Its BaaS price starts at Rs 8.99 lakh and the version with battery is Rs 14.34 lakh.
The indicative battery usage charge for the Nexon EV starts at Rs 4.4 per kilometre. This means that the initial price difference between the BaaS version and the conventional purchase option is very high but battery cost is not eliminated. Rather, it is paid separately according to usage.
For buyers who generally travel relatively long distances, it is possible to estimate monthly and annual battery payments to determine the total cost for ownership.
Tata Curvv EV BaaS Price
The Tata Curvv EV is also available with BaaS option with prices starting at Rs 10.99 lakh. The corresponding version with battery included starts at Rs 17.19 lakh.
In the BaaS model the battery usage charge for the Curvv EV is Rs 5 per kilometre. It allows customers to reduce the amount they need to pay when purchasing the vehicle, but the separate battery charge needs to be considered when calculating the long-term cost.
The Curvv EV’s addition to the programme provides customers with another option when choosing a premium electric SUV without having to pay the entire battery cost upfront.
Tata Sierra EV BaaS Price
Tata Sierra EV is another major addition to BaaS programme. The starting price under the battery-as-a-service model is Rs 11.99 lakh. The version with the battery included starts at Rs 18.79 lakh.
The battery usage charge for Sierra EV starts at Rs 5.5 per km. Similar to the other BaaS models, the lower entry price does not mean that customers are getting the battery for free. Instead, the battery cost is separated from the initial vehicle price and recovered through the usage-based payment structure.
That could make the Sierra EV available to buyers who are primarily concerned with reducing their initial purchase expenditure.
Tata Harrier EV BaaS Price
The Harrier EV is the highest starting price of four new models in terms of starting price. Its BaaS price starts at Rs 14.49 lakh compared to Rs 21.79 lakh for the battery version.
The battery usage charge starts at Rs 5.9 per kilometre. The lower upfront price creates a sizeable difference at the time of purchase, but buyers will need to factor in the per-kilometre battery charge when comparing the two ownership structures.
The Harrier EV’s inclusion means customers looking at Tata's larger electric SUV can now choose to pay the battery cost upfront or to use the separate battery service model.
Tata EV BaaS Price List
At the entry-level BaaS prices and battery usage charges are easy to understand for the four new models. The Nexon EV starts at Rs 8.99 lakh with battery charge from Rs 4.4 per kilometre. The Curvv EV starts at Rs 10.99 lakh with battery usage charges from Rs 5 per kilometre.
The Sierra EV is priced at Rs 11.99 lakh under BaaS. Battery usage starts at Rs 5.5 per km. The Harrier EV is priced at Rs 14.49 lakh and battery usage charge begins at Rs 5.9 per km.
All these figures are entry-level prices, and actual on-road cost will depend on the chosen variant, taxes, insurance, registration, etc.
Tiago EV And Punch EV Continue With BaaS
Tata's BaaS programme already covers the Tiago EV and Punch EV. The Tiago EV has a BaaS starting price of Rs 4.69 lakh, while the Punch EV starts at Rs 6.59 lakh under the programme.
The addition of four more vehicles gives customers more options in price categories and vehicle sizes. It also represents a broader approach to separating battery ownership costs from the initial purchase price of an electric vehicle.
Is Tata BaaS Cheaper For EV Buyers?
The lower upfront price under the BaaS programme should not be interpreted as a direct discount on the electric vehicle. The battery is still a separate cost, and customers need to pay the applicable usage charge in addition to expenses such as charging, insurance, maintenance and repairs.
Therefore, buyers should look at the ownership cost in full rather than just the advertised BaaS price. A customer who travels long distances might pay more over time for battery usage, and a user with lower annual usage may have a different cost profile.
The key attraction of BaaS is that it pays a lower initial payment. By taking out the battery cost from the vehicle price, Tata Motors is giving EV buyers another way to structure their purchase. With the Nexon, Curvv, Sierra and Harrier EVs now available for the programme, customers can order a wider range of Tata electric vehicles under the battery-as-a-service model.
