Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Unveiled With 326 HP, Becomes Most Powerful GTI Yet

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.3 GTI, the first all-electric model to carry the iconic GTI badge. With 326 hp and 545 Nm of torque, the electric hatchback becomes the most powerful series-production Volkswagen to wear the GTI name. It also marks another great first for the performance badge: rear-wheel drive.

Based on the ID.3 Neo, the new ID.3 GTI combines Volkswagen’s familiar GTI looks with an electric powertrain and performance-oriented chassis upgrades. Customer bookings will start in early 2027, and when the model will be available to buy it will also occur in conjunction with the GTI nameplate’s 50th anniversary in 2026.

The ID.3 GTI is powered by a 79kWh lithium-ion battery connected to a single electric motor on the rear axle. The motor generates 326 hp and 545 Nm of torque, giving the electric hatchback much more performance than the regular ID.3.

Volkswagen claims the ID.3 GTI can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h.

The electric GTI has four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual. They let drivers change the driving mode, depending on their preference (e.g., efficiency, comfort in the car, or a performance-oriented experience).

Volkswagen has also added a few performance-oriented accessories to the car. Launch control, progressive steering, and adaptive dampers are standard, and Volkswagen aims to make the electric hatchback feel like a true GTI rather than an EV with the badge on it.

Fast Charging Capability

The 79kWh battery supports DC fast charging at up to 183kW. Volkswagen says the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 29 minutes under suitable charging conditions.

The combination of rear-wheel drive, high power output and performance-oriented chassis technology of the ID.3 GTI is different from the front-wheel-drive GTI models.

The rear-mounted electric motor also changes the traditional GTI formula. Most GTI models have used front-wheel-drive configurations, so the ID.3 GTI is the first GTI with rear-wheel drive.

ID.3 GTI has a differentiated design

Volkswagen has made several exterior changes to visually separate the ID.3 GTI from the standard ID.3 Neo.

The model will be available in Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver, Grenadilla Black and Glacier White. Tornado Red, a colour inspired by the shade of the original Golf GTI, will also be offered.

The most familiar details are the red strip running between the IQ. LIGHT LED matrix headlights. The design is meant to echo the red grille surround that became a signature feature of the original Golf GTI.

The front section also gets a honeycomb-style grille, red accents, and vertically positioned LED elements. Gloss-black finishes are used on exterior mirror housings, rocker panels, and lower bumper sections.

The electric hatchback is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels from Wörthersee. The wheels come from the famous GTI parties around Lake Wörthersee in Austria.

In the rear, Volkswagen has added a big spoiler and sporty bumper. GTI badging is up front to tie the model to the performance-focused family.

A New Chapter For the GTI Badge

The ID.3 GTI is a big change for Volkswagen’s performance sub-brand. The GTI badge is historically associated with petrol-fuelled hot hatchbacks, in particular the Golf GTI.

With the switch to an electric powertrain, we are moving in a new direction while keeping familiar elements such as the styling, performance-oriented driving modes, and chassis technology.

With 326 hp, rear-wheel drive, and a claimed 5.6-second 0-100 km/h time, the ID.3 GTI combines the compact proportions of an electric hatchback with a performance profile that is squarely in Volkswagen’s sporty line-up.

Volkswagen will open customer bookings for the ID.3 GTI in early 2027. Volkswagen will provide more information about market-specific availability, pricing, and final specifications closer to launch.
