The woman, who works in a private company, filed a complaint claiming that her partner disappeared after his family opposed their proposed marriage. She has also accused his parents of verbally abusing her and threatening to kill her when she attempted to contact them after his disappearance. Police have registered the complaint and begun investigating the allegations.

According to the complaint, the woman and a man, identified as Surya, a native of Channarayapatna taluk in Hassan district, had been living together in Bengaluru for about five months. They began with the knowledge and consent of Surya’s parents, Raj Kumar and Prem Kumari.

The family had promised they would marry after Surya’s younger sister got married, which made the woman happy and suggested the relationship would eventually lead to marriage. Surya’s younger sister lived with her parents for the first three months in their live-in relationship, the complaint alleged.

And yet Surya's friend Praveen, according to the report, was said to have made negative comments about the woman to Surya's parents as soon as he heard of it. The parents were against the relationship after hearing of the friend's comments, it was alleged.

The marriage being suggested became more against the couple; the woman's complaint says that she felt the inter-caste nature of the relationship was a major reason for the opposition. The sudden change in the family's stance caused tensions between the couple and raised doubts about whether the marriage would actually take place.

The woman has also claimed that Surya left their shared accommodation and did not return. On September 24, he went to work and never came back. His location was not explained in the information about the case. The woman believes that the change in his behaviour appeared to be because of the opposition of his family. His disappearance also forced her to question the future of their relationship and marriage promises that she now feels she has been promised. The exact reasons for his departure and his current location will need to be determined by the police.

The allegations became even worse when the woman contacted Surya’s parents after he disappeared. Raj Kumar and Prem Kumari have been verbally abusive and threatened to kill her if she spoke out about the matter in public, she has said. And the threats added a whole new dimension to the dispute and led her to seek out help from the police.

At this stage, these allegations are only allegations, and the responses of the accused parties are not provided. The police will have to investigate the complaint and gather evidence to make any conclusions about the threats and the relationship.

The Mahalakshmi Layout police have taken on the complaint and launched an investigation. The investigation will look into the woman's claims, the sequence of events leading to Surya's departure, and verify the claims of the parents and his friend. The information we have does not establish whether any arrests have taken place so far or if the police have found Surya. All this will be confirmed by the investigation and any other evidence gathered by the authorities.

The case is a prime example of what a relationship can look like when family conflict arises under the influence of caste conflict. What is needed regarding the threat of intimidation by police on the part of the woman is a fair investigation to ensure that it is not done in a way that may have been done. The police investigation should determine the facts and assess whether any offences have been committed. The allegations of intimidation against those named in the complaint should not be taken seriously until then.
