Poor road conditions in Bengaluru have once again become a safety issue after part of a road near St Sophia High School in Nagarabhavi collapsed. The damaged stretch (in Vishweshwaraiah Layout) has reportedly sunk by five to six feet, and residents and commuters are worried about it.
The incident has once again brought Bengaluru’s roads (potholes and uneven surfaces are a constant problem) into focus. Residents now fear something more serious: roads are developing deep cavities under the surface, so sudden collapses are possible.
Road Sinks 5–6 Feet Near St. Sophia High School
A section of road in front of St. Sophia High School in Nagarabhavi has collapsed. The road has caved in by five to six feet exposing the ground underneath it.
The incident has raised questions about how well the road was built and what materials were used in its construction. The soil beneath that stretch may be missing or not compacted properly, so there is an underground cavity.
Such conditions can make roads unstable and increase the risk of further collapse (when vehicles and pedestrians still use that stretch).
Residents Fear Further Road Collapses
The incident has caused anxiety among people living in and around Vishweshwaraiah Layout. The possibility of additional sections collapsing (where there is pedestrian/vehicle movement) has become a major concern.
Potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces are commonly associated with road damage in Bengaluru, but a deep collapse of this kind is different because the road surface we see may not be reflecting the extent of damage underneath.
If underground cavities go undetected, then even apparently intact sections of a road could become unstable.
Questions Raised Over Civic Authorities' Response
Questions have also been raised over the response of GBA personnel. Though the road reportedly collapsed, there was no precautionary measure taken and repair work delayed.
Residents want the damaged section secured, vehicles and pedestrians prevented from entering that dangerous part of the road, and an urgent technical check.
Filling up the visible depression may not be enough if underlying soil has been washed away or the road foundation damaged. Underground structures should be properly assessed and the affected part reconstructed.
Bengaluru's Road Safety Concerns Return to Focus
The Nagarabhavi incident shows that regular road inspections, construction standards, and maintenance need to be done across Bengaluru.
Since the city is constantly moving traffic, damaged roads can be dangerous for motorists, pedestrians, and schoolchildren. Authorities may need to check which stretch of road was affected and whether there are any underground cavities like this elsewhere in the area.
The residents of Vishweshwaraiah Layout's priority is to secure the collapsed section and repair it without further delay.
The incident has once again put Bengaluru’s infrastructure under the spotlight — how safe are the roads when the ground beneath them may be giving way?
