A suspected thief was caught red-handed by the son of a homeowner and residents while allegedly stealing gold jewellery from a house in Thimmasandra village of Doddaballapur taluk in Bengaluru Rural district. The family members were away when the incident took place so the accused could enter the locked house and steal the valuables.
The accused has been identified as Santhosh, a native of Sarjapur. Initial information said that he saw nobody at home and used the key kept on roof ledge to open the door. He entered the house and took gold ornaments before trying to escape.
However, his attempt to escape with the stolen jewellery failed. Tejas son of homeowner Muniraju, and other villagers caught him when he was leaving the house with valuables in hand.
Thief Used Key Kept on Roof Ledge to Open House
The accused allegedly took advantage of the family’s absence. He found that a key had been kept on the roof ledge and used it to unlock the house.
After he gained entry into the house he searched it and took gold ornaments. He tried to escape from the house with those stolen ornaments.
Tejas and other villagers caught the thief in action when they saw him suspected to have stolen something. They caught him before he could run away from the village.
The incident has highlighted the need to keep house keys in a safe place (especially when family members are away).
Villagers Catch Accused and Hand Him Over to Police
Tejas and the villagers reportedly beat up the thief after he was caught. They handed him over to police later on.
Santhosh (accused) is said to be from Sarjapur. Police are now expected to probe the theft and ascertain under what circumstances he entered the house.
The incident took place in Thimmasandra village, which is under the jurisdiction of Doddaballapur Rural Police Station in Bengaluru Rural district.
A case has been registered at Doddaballapur Rural Police Station and further investigation is on.
Police Investigating Gold Jewellery Theft
The police investigation will determine the full sequence of events (how the accused got into the house and what jewellery was stolen).
The amount and value of the gold ornaments have not been revealed in the first report. The police will also look at the evidence and take statements from the homeowner’s family members and witnesses.
The incident reminds residents to leave their homes unattended. If spare keys are left on roof ledges or outside the house, they can be stolen.
The homeowner’s son and local residents intervened quickly and the suspected thief did not escape with the valuables. But allegations against Santhosh will be established only through police investigation and legal proceedings.
The case has again raised issues related to residential security in villages and towns around Bengaluru. Details will emerge as investigation progresses.
