Big Relief for Tamil Cinema: Theatres Can Now Start New Film Shows at 6 AM

Tamil cinema fans have something to cheer about as early morning movie screenings are coming back to Tamil Nadu after nearly three years. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government has approved changes which will allow theatres to screen newly released Tamil films from 6 AM onwards.

The decision announced will benefit film producers, theatre owners and audiences ahead of the Diwali releases. It is also an important change in the state’s cinema exhibition rules.

Tamil Nadu Government Approves Six Shows a Day

Under the new arrangement, theatres will be allowed to show new Tamil films six times a day in the first week of release. The permitted screening time starts at 6 AM and ends at 2:30 AM the next day.

The extra show facility also applies on weekends, public holidays and local festival days. The government has asked the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957 to be amended accordingly so that the decision could be implemented.

Theatres then had four shows a day first show started at 9 AM. Government had earlier relaxed the limit so that an additional show could be added under certain conditions but exhibitors needed separate approval.

The new decision gives a broader basis for scheduling additional screenings.

Why Were 6 AM Shows Stopped?

Early morning screenings were stopped in Tamil Nadu in 2023 after a person died during celebrations for the release of Ajith Kumar’s film Thunivu.

On 11 January 2023 a 19-year old fan Bharath Kumar died falling from a moving vehicle during celebrations in Chennai. This incident raised questions about crowd management and public safety at major film releases.

After the incident the previous government banned early morning screenings. It disrupted a popular tradition in Tamil cinema that fans would gather outside theatres before sunrise to celebrate release of films featuring major stars.

The latest decision restores the early show facility but puts responsibility on authorities and theatre management to ensure screenings are safe.

Film Industry Associations Welcomed the Decision

The relaxation comes after requests from several industry organisations including Tamil Film Active Producers Association, Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association.

Producers and exhibitors have said that without early shows Tamil Nadu was disadvantaged vis-a-vis neighbouring states and overseas markets where audiences could watch major releases earlier.

The new schedule might allow theatres to accommodate more viewers on the opening days of a film; it might help producers retain more first-day audience interest in Tamil Nadu.

Which Films Could Benefit First?

Timing of the decision is also important because several films are releasing during Diwali period.

Suriya’s Scene and Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 are among Tamil releases scheduled to be released on November 6, 2026. These films should get early morning screening facility back as theatres have been given the permission for it now (subject to scheduling).

Safety Remains Important

The return of 6 AM shows will hopefully bring back some of that first day first show fun but crowd control, traffic plans and safe fan gatherings are still important too.

For Tamil cinema the decision is commercial as well as a return to familiar theatrical tradition. Its long-term success will depend on how much audience enthusiasm it can co-exist with public safety.
