The special package has got attention because it combines commonly used vegetables in one small kit (total weight 2.55 kg to 2.6 kg). For families looking for budget friendly grocery options, this could be a convenient way of buying several cooking ingredients at fixed price.

The biggest USP of the Vetri Special Vegetable Package is that it gives 10 different items for ₹100. Each kit has 500 grams each of onions and tomatoes two of the most commonly used ingredients in Indian kitchens; brinjal (250 gm) and potatoes (250 gm). The package can be used to prepare a variety of everyday dishes, carrots (200 gm) and beans (200 gm) are also given to customers which can be used in curries, vegetable rice, sambar and other traditional recipes.

The other items in the kit are 100 grams of green chillies, 100 grams lemons and 50 grams ginger which are commonly used to flavour and give freshness to everyday meals. The kit also contains one coconut weighing between 400 grams and 450 grams (coconut is an ingredient in several South Indian dishes especially Tamil Nadu where it is used in chutneys, curries, vegetable preparations and traditional recipes). The idea is that these items provide consumers with a useful combination of vegetables and cooking ingredients.

Here is the complete list of 10 items in the ₹100 Vetri Special Vegetable Package:

  • Onion – 500 grams
  • Tomato – 500 grams
  • Brinjal – 250 grams
  • Potato – 250 grams
  • Carrot – 200 grams
  • Beans – 200 grams
  • Green chilli – 100 grams
  • Lemon – 100 grams
  • Ginger – 50 grams
  • Coconut – One weighing 400–450 grams

The combined weight of the package is between 2.55 kg to 2.6 kg (depending on weight of coconut). At ₹100, it gives households a fixed price option for buying multiple ingredients together. Consumers can use vegetables for breakfast accompaniments, lunch preparations, evening dishes and dinner recipes throughout the day.

The fact that onions, tomatoes, potatoes, brinjal, carrots and beans are included makes the kit relevant to households which buy these ingredients regularly too.

Another important aspect of the initiative is mobile vegetable vending. Instead of consumers having to travel to traditional vegetable markets the special packages are being sold through mobile vending vehicles.

This way vegetables are brought closer to residential neighbourhoods and easier to buy working people, senior citizens and families with limited time for shopping could benefit from such a distribution system. Mobile vending vehicles can also help improve access to basic vegetables in areas where regular market access may not be convenient.

Vegetable prices are often volatile because of seasonal availability, weather conditions, transportation costs and supply-demand changes. Heavy rainfall or disruption to transportation can increase the prices of commonly eaten vegetables which put a strain on household budgets.

A fixed price package with multiple vegetables might make it easier for consumers to plan grocery purchases but savings will depend on local market prices prevailing at the time and quality and availability of items supplied.

The Vetri Special Vegetable Package also shows that affordable food distribution is part of public welfare. Bringing together 10 items at a single price means that the programme addresses everyday household needs rather than occasional purchases; whether it works or not will depend on regular supply, freshness, coverage and mobile vending vehicles in different neighbourhoods.

Families will be interested in the ₹100 package as well where will the vehicles be available and how often will the kits be distributed? Consumers will also want to know if this is going to be extended to more locations or whether additional vegetable combinations may be added later.

In the end Tamil Nadu’s Vetri Special Vegetable Package for ₹100 is a combination of 10 common vegetables and cooking ingredients (onions, tomatoes, brinjal, potatoes, carrots, beans, green chillies, lemons, ginger and coconut) in a kit weighing about 2.55 kg to 2.6 kg so that everyday grocery shopping becomes easier.

The mobile vending model adds another layer of accessibility and public response will determine how long the programme will reach and impact people but where it goes from here.
