Claude and Gmail Integration Gets a Major Upgrade: Emails Can Now Be Sent Directly

Claude AI has received a big upgrade that takes it deep into Gmail. Anthropic has expanded Claude's Gmail integration so the AI assistant can now reply to and send emails on the user's behalf.

Earlier, Claude could connect to Gmail, search for emails, read messages and create drafts. The new update makes it possible to complete the email process by sending messages. And then users can ask Claude to respond to an email and give the AI more of the work rather than just a draft.

The update is part of Anthropic’s larger push to make Claude an AI assistant that can perform tasks instead of simply answering questions.

However, that headline that Claude can send emails “without your permission” needs some clarification. Anthropic’s current Gmail connector documentation says users still have control over whether Claude needs approval before taking actions. The company also provides settings that allow users to review emails before sending them.

That distinction is important because giving Claude access to Gmail does not mean the AI can randomly start sending emails whenever it wants.

How Claude Can Send Emails From Gmail

The Gmail integration allows Claude to work directly with a connected Gmail account. Users can ask Claude to find an email, understand the conversation and prepare a response.

With the new capabilities, Claude can go beyond preparing a draft. It can reply to an existing email thread and send the response through Gmail. It can also send emails based on instructions given by the user.

For example, a user could ask Claude to respond to a particular email and say that they are available for a meeting next week. Claude can use the email conversation as context and then prepare the answer to be sent according to the user's approved response setting.

People who have so many emails a day will have no time to work with.

The feature would be especially useful for repetitive work. Users might ask Claude to handle simple replies, follow-ups and other routine email tasks without manually writing every response.

Anthropic had previously limited its Gmail connector to reading emails and creating drafts. The company's own help page from May stated that Claude could not send emails and that users had to send drafts manually.

The Gmail connector can also help users search through their inbox, find important information and summarise conversations. Claude can use information from connected emails to answer questions and prepare responses.

This makes the most recent update so far an important step towards agentic AI.

Instead of just telling a user what to do, Claude can now do part of the task itself.

Does Claude really send emails without permission?

This is where we need to help users to understand the settings.

The update has reported Claude being able to send emails without asking for approval every time. Anthropic, however, says users can decide whether Claude should ask for approval before sending an email.

This means that users will have more control over how autonomous Claude should be.

Someone who wants complete control can keep approval enabled and review an email before Claude sends it. Someone who wants Claude to do routine tasks automatically can configure the feature differently.

But it can also be a matter of what users are allowed to do with an AI assistant.

Email accounts contain highly personal information. They can include financial messages, work conversations, private documents, passwords, booking details and sensitive discussions.

To let an AI access to Gmail would take a certain level of trust.

Google also allows users to review and remove access given to third-party applications connected to their Google Account. Users can manage these linked applications through their Google Account settings.

Anthropic says Claude only accesses connected Gmail data when the user asks it to do a task that requires information. The company also says that Claude retrieves the minimum information needed for the requested task.

The new sending capability makes these controls even more important.

A mistake in an AI-generated email can have real consequences. Claude might misunderstand the context, use the wrong tone or send information that the user did not intend to share.

For this reason, users should be especially careful when allowing automatic sending for important work or personal conversations.

The upgrade comes on top of security researchers’ concerns over Claude’s browser capabilities earlier this year. Researchers have warned that malicious browser extensions could potentially trigger Claude for Chrome actions including Gmail and other websites and services. Anthropic did have answers for these issues, but the incidents highlighted the dangers of giving AI assistants access to powerful accounts.

Where are AI assistants going in Gmail?

Claude is moving from just creating text to actually doing things on behalf of the users. Gmail is one such example, and Anthropic has also extended Claude's ability to work with Google Drive. Claude can now manage files in Drive, including searching, sharing, moving and deleting files.

For users, this will make everyday work much easier to do. Instead of searching through emails, writing replies and organising files, they can ask AI assistants to do the rest of the job for them.

But a higher degree of convenience comes with greater responsibility.

Before using Gmail to connect with Claude, users need to know what access they are giving the service and check the approval settings. They should also avoid automatically sending sensitive emails if they are not comfortable with the possibility of sending sensitive emails.

Claude now has the ability to send people the right message, so it’s more than just suggesting what users should write.

That could save users a lot of time, but it also makes careful permission settings more important than ever.
