iPhone 18 Pro Demand Surges in India Despite Price Hike: Why Apple’s Premium Phone Is Becoming a Status Symbol

Apple’s new high-end smartphone iPhone 18 Pro is available in India at a premium price of ₹1.64 lakh, but that hasn’t stopped the company’s flagship device from being the product that keeps people interested. iPhone 18 Pro is launched at ₹1.64 lakh in India which puts it firmly in the premium smartphone space in which people are paying for specifications as well as branding, ecosystem integration and status to own an Apple flagship.

Apple began pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in India on September 12 and will release them on September 18. India is among the markets Apple is targeting with the new Pro models at launch, illustrating Apple's increasing importance to its global business.

But the pricing is one of the biggest talking points. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 for 256GB and ₹1,89,900 for 512GB and ₹2,39,900 for 1TB. Of course the 1TB version is ₹2,39,900, and the 2TB version ₹3,14,900. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is ₹1,79,900 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. These prices put Apple's new Pro models in a luxurious club for a smartphone.

The high price has not come without criticism. In India, the iPhone 18 Pro is ₹30,000 more expensive than the previous model (Pro). Meanwhile, Apple has also raised prices in India for older iPhones instead of coming out with a new one and the same price cut.

Why is demand still strong? One of the major reasons is Apple’s brand positioning. Apple’s logo, design and retail experience are such that many people think the iPhone represents a lifestyle. And in India’s ever expanding premium smartphone market, the latest Pro model can have a social and aspirational value.

The iPhone 18 Pro also features major technical upgrades. Apple says it has a new A20 Pro chip, a new vapour chamber and an improved 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. The company has also improved battery life, photography, video recording and artificial intelligence with the latest software.

Another big attraction is Apple’s ecosystem. Users of Macs, iPads, Apple Watches and AirPods may have a better shot of staying in Apple’s ecosystem if they already have products like it. Features like device integration, data transfer, continuity and Apple’s services may also make moving from one platform to another less attractive for existing customers.

Apple is also making the purchase more accessible through financing and trade-in options. Its Indian online store has no-cost EMI options and instant cashback on eligible purchases, while customers can receive trade-in value for existing devices. Such schemes can reduce the immediate financial burden even when the headline price remains high.

The company’s growing manufacturing presence in India is another aspect of the broader story. India is also an increasingly important market and production base for Apple, so the premium smartphone market is very strategically important for them.

But strong interest should not be taken to mean that demand is universal. The iPhone 18 Pro is still not available to a large number of Indian consumers at prices above ₹1.6 lakh. The competition from high-end Android phones also gives buyers alternatives with high-end cameras, displays and performance at different price points.

What’s amazing is that Apple still maintains premium positioning at the same price. The iPhone 18 Pro is not just a yearly smartphone upgrade, but a combination of technology, design, ecosystem and brand identity. How long that positioning will be able to survive given consumers’ appetite, competition and the new features will have come into play in the future.

So far, the launch of iPhone 18 Pro shows that a large segment of India’s smartphone market remains willing to pay Apple’s latest flagship for a substantial premium. And that makes the iPhone 18 Pro as much a statement of premium consumption as it is a piece of technology.
