SanDisk Unveils NAS 600 And NAS 800 SSDs For Always-On Storage And High-Performance Workloads

SanDisk has introduced two new SSD families for NAS systems, with the NAS 600 family designed for HDD replacement and the NAS 800 for all-flash storage.

SanDisk has launched two new SSDs for network-attached storage (NAS) systems. The SanDisk NAS 600 SATA SSD and NAS 800 NVMe SSD are designed for data in continuous storage environments for multi-user and application support. SanDisk will market the two drives as the solution for users who increasingly rely on NAS devices as private infrastructure for homes, creative studios, and small businesses.

The two SSD families have different requirements. The NAS 600 is a relatively simple upgrade to existing NAS systems that use traditional hard drives, allowing users to switch to flash storage without necessarily replacing the entire enclosure. The NAS 800 is for more demanding all-flash and hybrid NAS systems such as databases, virtualization, content creation, and AI-related applications.

SanDisk NAS SSDs target the growing demands of private cloud storage

NAS devices are typically associated with backups and basic file sharing, but they are now playing a bigger role as users and small organizations increasingly use them to store and manage large datasets. A NAS can provide centralized storage that multiple computers can access at once, and therefore it is essential to maintain continuous performance and long-term functionality for systems in operation 24/7.

SanDisk says the new NAS portfolio has been developed for this changing use. The new drives are not optimized solely for the bursty workloads so prevalent with consumer PCs; they are meant for sustained activity in multi-user storage environments.

The company also sees NAS systems being used for collaborative workflows and private cloud deployments. Creative professionals working with large media files, businesses running shared applications, and users looking for local alternatives to cloud-based storage services are all examples of this.

NAS 600 focuses on replacing HDDs in existing NAS systems

The NAS 600 SATA SSD is the more accessible one in SanDisk’s new lineup of SSDs. It aims to fit into a NAS enclosure that already has hard drives and will change to solid-state storage when users already have a NAS enclosure filled with hard drives and want to switch to solid-state storage.

The drive is a 2.5-inch, 7mm SATA form factor. SanDisk says it is designed to fit into 3.5-inch NAS bays that support 2.5-inch SSDs, but the NAS enclosure to which it is compatible might need an adapter.

Endurance is one of the major selling points. The 4TB NAS 600 model can hold up to 2,500TBW or terabytes written, and the drive has a reliability rating of up to 2.25 million hours MTTF. The sequential read performance is rated up to 560MB/s.

SanDisk says the NAS 600 can be used in multi-drive and RAID configurations for shared storage with multiple users accessing data at the same time. Moving from HDDs to SSDs will decrease mechanical noise and improve responsiveness; however, the performance of the NAS hardware, networking, and workload will vary.

The company's endurance and reliability figures are based on its own testing methods. The TBW rating uses the JEDEC JESD219 client workload standard, while the MTTF figure is based on Telcordia SR-332 stress testing. These figures are manufacturer ratings rather than independent guarantees of individual drive lifespan.

NAS 800 brings PCIe 5.0 performance to NAS environments

At the top of the list is the NAS 800 NVMe SSD. Unlike the SATA-based NAS 600, the NAS 800 has a PCIe 5.0 interface and is M.2 2280.

SanDisk is targeting the NAS 800 at users who have all-flash or hybrid storage systems where throughput and endurance are important. Possible workloads include databases, virtual machines, professional content creation, and AI-related applications.

The top-end 7.68TB model is rated for up to 14PBW, or 14,000TBW. SanDisk also lists up to 2.3 million random-read IOPS and 2 million random-write IOPS for the 3.84TB version.

The 1.92TB model achieves the highest advertised sequential performance, with read speeds up to 14,900MB/s and write speeds up to 13,200MB/s. These figures put the NAS 800 in a very different category from SATA-based storage, although actual speeds in a NAS will depend heavily on the enclosure, CPU, PCIe implementation, networking infrastructure, and software configuration.

The NAS 800 is based on SanDisk's TLC 3D NAND and can be used in capacities of 960GB to 7.68TB. The drive has been tested with several leading NAS platforms, the company says.

NAS 600 vs NAS 800: Two SSDs for different NAS users

SanDisk's new products are not direct competitors. Rather, they are two different upgrade paths for NAS users.

The NAS 600 is focused on modernizing an existing HDD-based NAS. The SATA interface complements existing legacy NAS hardware, and the high endurance rating is suitable for network storage tasks.

The NAS 800 is designed for users of a much faster flash-based NAS. The PCIe 5.0 interface, high random I/O performance, and a much higher endurance rating make it a better choice for demanding professional and business workloads.

This distinction could be particularly relevant in a NAS environment where backup devices are no longer just backup devices. Users with an existing enclosure can transition to flash storage without any kind of system rebuild. For building a new NAS, the NAS 800 is much faster for storage.

Pricing and India availability remain unclear

SanDisk has announced U.S. starting prices for both products. The NAS 600 starts at $179.99 for the 500GB model, while the NAS 800 starts at $309.99 for the 960GB version.

Both SSD families will be available for sale worldwide from September 2026 through SanDisk's website and various retailers and e-tailers. However, SanDisk has not announced pricing for the India launch date or retail partners for either drive at the time of writing.

That leaves Indian NAS enthusiasts and businesses waiting for more details before making a purchase decision. Local pricing could differ significantly from the U.S. MSRP due to taxes, distribution costs, and regional pricing strategies.

For now, the NAS 600 seems to be the best choice for users looking to replace HDDs in compatible NAS systems, while the NAS 800 is the top choice for users who need high-performance flash for demanding applications.

Now that SanDisk has launched a new storage product, they are clearly turning to a storage space in which endurance, sustained workloads, and multi-user access are much more important than raw capacity. As NAS devices increasingly become private cloud platforms and local infrastructure for creative and AI workloads, dedicated SSDs could be an increasingly important part of that ecosystem.
