Telegram users in India, Singapore and other Asian markets reported issues with messaging, chats, logins and media loading as the platform went down on September 8, 2026.
Telegram users were hit with a major service outage on Tuesday September 8 when thousands of people reported that the messaging platform wasn’t working properly. People in India, Singapore and several other Asian countries complained about failed messages, chats not loading, accounts not connecting to them. Users started searching online for answers to one simple question: “Is Telegram down today?”.
The disruption appeared to be across several of Telegram’s core services not just one. Some users were able to open the app but couldn’t send or receive messages; others said conversations weren’t refreshing or that the app was stuck on the connecting screen; login problems were also reported by some users.
Singapore seemed to be one of the hardest hit places during the incident. Outage reports in the country reportedly rose to nearly 4000 at the height of the disruption. Reports from India and other parts of Asia showed that the problem was not limited to a single country so the incident seems to be related to Telegram’s regional infrastructure.
Why Is Telegram Not Working Today?
Telegram services were down during the outage. Messages would get stuck when sent, incoming messages didn’t arrive and existing chats took unusually long to refresh. Some people also couldn’t log in or the app stuck trying to connect.
The fact that people were reporting the problem in such large numbers showed that it wasn’t caused by some individual user’s internet connection or smartphone. If a lot of users in different places are having the same problem at the same time then generally something is wrong with the service itself.
What Caused the Telegram Outage?
The technical reason for the outage on September 8 hasn’t been officially stated by Telegram yet but reports and observations around the incident pointed towards a problem in Telegram Singapore infrastructure (also known as DC5).
If that infrastructure problem was indeed causing the issue, then it could explain why some Asian markets were hit harder than other markets because Telegram operates infrastructure in different regions (an issue in one location may not cause a global outage).
However, the Singapore data-centre explanation should be taken as a reported possibility not confirmed cause. Telegram had not given any public technical explanation for the outage at the time of writing.
Which Countries Were Affected by the Telegram Outage?
And it wasn’t just India which saw outages spike, Singapore had the biggest jump in outage reports and users in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines also reported trouble accessing Telegram.
The varying intensity of the reports suggests that outage had a regional component, some users were able to continue using Telegram normally and others had major disruptions. This is when specific infrastructure (regional) or routing systems are affected.
What Problems Did Telegram Users Face?
Telegram users reported a variety of problems during the outage. Messages didn’t send, incoming messages didn’t appear and chats refused to refresh; some said Telegram was stuck on Connecting while others said channels weren’t loading or images or other media weren’t loading either.
Login problems were also reported in some locations. Audio and video-related functions for some users were said to be affected but the severity of the problem depended on location and account.
For those of us who use Telegram for work, business communication, communities or personal conversations even a temporary outage is frustrating. People also started looking on other social media platforms to see if the problem was with their connection or whether it affected Telegram as a whole.
Is Telegram Banned in India?
The September 8 outage should not be seen as a new Telegram ban in India. From what we know about the incident, it seemed to me that the disruption was more likely technical service problem than evidence of a new government blocking order.
Users having problems with Telegram therefore don’t necessarily need to change their network settings, uninstall the app or assume that the platform has been blocked.
Is Telegram Working Again?
As disruption began to ease Telegram services started to come back in affected regions but availability could vary depending on where the user was located and what Telegram services they were trying to access.
If Telegram keeps showing connection problems then wait for the service to stabilize before doing more drastic troubleshooting steps. Restarting the application or checking internet connection might rule out a local problem but reinstalling Telegram is generally not needed if the problem is on the server side.
The outage on September 8 once again demonstrated how dependent modern communication has become on cloud infrastructure and regional data centres. Users in several Asian markets were badly disrupted but Telegram services began to move back towards recovery. Until Telegram gives an official technical explanation, we don’t know exactly what caused it.
