X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new feature called X Numbers, which is meant to make communication on the platform more flexible by letting users talk to each other on X Chat without having to tell each other their phone numbers or follow each other on Twitter.
And it is part of X’s overall mission to expand its communication tools and to make the platform easier for private conversations.
People who wanted to communicate privately with a person outside of the social media environment had to transfer contacts or find them by following them. X Numbers aims to do that by offering another way for users to find and contact each other within X's communication ecosystem.
So, X Numbers can be used by X Chat users when people can send and receive messages without having to share their phone numbers. Someone who wants to keep their private phone number and social media account separate could have no need to share the phone number at all. Their X-based identifier can be used to communicate instead of the phone number.
Another aspect of the feature is that users do not need to follow each other to communicate through X Chat. That is how follows and messaging become different with social channels. Users can still have their follow lists but they can also communicate directly with people outside of their social network.
The feature reflects the changing role of social media platforms. X has more recently become more than a site to share public posts and short updates. But it also has been developing more communication resources -- private messaging, for example -- to allow users to connect more directly.
The best benefit of X Numbers for users is that communication without having a phone number is possible. Phone numbers are commonly used in messaging as the primary identifier but they can also expose personal contact information to people users may not know well. A system based on an X identifier can provide one way to start communication while keeping the phone number private.
The feature could also be useful for professional networking, online communities, creators, businesses and other users that regularly communicate with people they have never met before. So, if a creator converses with one of their followers or another user through a post or a conversation on X, they could chat on X Chat without the need to change their mobile phone number.
But users need to be aware of privacy and account-security issues with any messaging service. The ability to communicate without a phone number doesn’t mean that every conversation or account interaction is private. Users should review available controls, know who can contact them and be wary of sharing sensitive personal information in chats.
The introduction of X Numbers comes as X continues to put a messaging foundation in place and grow the functions available on the platform. It wants to make X a better communication platform, mixing public conversations, private messaging and other digital interactions into a single platform.
Existing X users will have another way to connect with people without changing their existing relationships or putting their mobile numbers on display. It also represents a shift towards platform-based identities as opposed to phone-number-based communications.

When X Numbers becomes available to users, how smoothly people can use the feature and the privacy and security controls around X Chat will be important. For now, the feature is just another step in X’s messaging evolution and the more people can communicate with one another and keep their phone numbers separate from their social media accounts more easily.
