Most other social media speakers recently reported that X (formerly Twitter) no longer let the users copy video links. This rumor quickly spread about and users assumed they were no longer able to share videos with their friends, but the rumor doesn't quite make sense because they can. We still have the feature and it was largely caused by an April Fools’ prank and a little inconvenience from the month and just a handful of glitches.
What Sparked the Rumor
On April 1, 2026, some viral posts circulated that X had permanently disabled the "Copy Link" option for videos. These rumors became amplified since it could make people laugh on April Fools’ Day, when tech companies and people often make jokes but also fake announcements to others. Users took this claim seriously.
Reality Check
It turns out X doesn't delete the video link copy. It gives users the ability to share and copy links that are already out there via the video link copy feature. People who encountered some issues with videos auto‑playing but were no longer able to look for a link were able to do so anyway, so these were minor glitches, not an entire platform‑wide change. Most significantly, X did not make any official announcement about elimination.
Current Status
- Copy Link Works: The option to copy video links is still available.
- No official change: X has not released any public statement about the cancellation of functionality.
- User Confusion: The prank and scattered glitches caused unnecessary panic: The prankster was so much of the fun too.
Why This Matters
For users on X, video sharing is crucial. Eliminating the ability to copy links would have limited how information spread from one platform to the next. And because we still have that feature, all users can still share videos with friends and communities and are free to do so.
Lessons for Users
In the beginning, the way to believe in something to share is to make these kinds of posts. Viral posts, particularly around April 1, might be misleading. In fact, checking official sources and trusted tech news journalists would check whether a platform has actually changed after all with the real change already taking place.
Finally, there are no rumors in X that we have removed the option to copy video links to the site. That feature works and we are still able to share videos as usual. The prank is a fun one but I want people to keep a close eye when the message doesn't translate and be careful whether something is going to get shared or something’s made up and you can still copy a video link as long as X does not change all the features with you.
