A 19-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for driving under the influence of alcohol after a serious road accident at Peerzadiguda in the Hyderabad–Warangal National Highway on Thursday morning after his SUV crashed into a Hyundai i10 that was transporting a couple and collided with an electricity pole near Pillar No. 57 of the Uppal-Narapally elevated bridge in Medipally.
The car hit the couple several times and the couple were injured and raised concerns over reckless driving, underage drivers and road safety in Hyderabad’s rapidly growing suburban areas.
The police said the accident took place at 6.30 am on an early morning journey at around 6.30 am. The Hyundai i10 was the only one to be injured and the couple wounded were Sai Shiva, 30 and his wife Meghana, 28.
The couple had been heading from LB Nagar to Narsampet in Warangal district when the SUV collided with their car in the direction of Peerzadiguda from behind. The car was reported to have overturned three times which ended up in a serious road accident.
The SUV continued moving after the car hit it and finally crashed into an electricity pole. The pole fell on the vehicle after the impact, reports said. The accident could have caused more serious damage to cars and to the road network. The injured couple were taken to a private hospital in Chaitanyapuri for a medical check.
Medipally Inspector D. Jalender Reddy said the SUV driver, Akun Sabharwal, took a BAC of 238 mg per 100 ml. The permitted limit is 30 mg per 100 ml. If confirmed in the official records, the reported reading would be nearly eight times that.
Alcohol can severely impair judgement, reaction time, coordination and the ability to respond to sudden changes in traffic. These risks become particularly serious when a driver is travelling at high speed or operating a vehicle without the required legal authorisation.
Police also claimed Sabharwal was driving without a valid driving licence. The SUV had a temporary registration number but was found to have a fake number plate, they said. These violations have added another layer of complexity to the investigation, not only the collision itself but the details of vehicle documentation and why the young man was allowed to drive.
The police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and the role of the vehicle owner, they said. Medipally Police have made a case against Sabharwal and Mangilal, the SUV owner, for allowing a person without a valid driving licence to drive the vehicle. Both individuals are being questioned and their charges will then be investigated, they said.
According to Inspector Reddy, the crash happened so early in the morning when traffic was slow because of festival holidays. He said the accident would have been worse if the accident had taken place at peak hours. Busy roads are usually full of vehicles and pedestrians, so secondary collisions are likely when a driver loses control. Dangerous driving behaviour can put not only the driver but also passengers, other motorists and road users in danger, he said.
The accident also shows how the law is enforcing drunk driving, driving licences and vehicle registration. Alcohol consumption can also cause unsafe driving and unlicensed driving poses a problem so a driver’s legal eligibility and preparedness to drive a vehicle is questioned in law enforcement. Proper registration of vehicle and number plates are also important for identification and accountability in an automobile accident.
Drivers will have to avoid driving after drinking alcohol, speed down and check that anyone who is driving a vehicle is a valid driver. Drivers have a responsibility to make sure that vehicles are not handed over to unauthorised drivers. Passengers and others on the road can’t bear the burden of another person’s reckless behaviour.
A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol after the SUV he was driving rammed into a car and crashed into an electricity pole at Peerzadiguda on the Hyderabad–Warangal National Highway on Thursday morning. The accident occurred around 6.30 am near Pillar No. 57 of the Uppal–Narapally elevated corridor in Medipally. The impact caused a Hyundai i10 carrying a couple to overturn multiple times. The injured were identified as Sai Shiva, 30, and his wife, Meghana, 28. The couple were travelling from LB Nagar towards Narsampet in Warangal district when the SUV allegedly hit their car from behind near Peerzadiguda. According to Medipally Inspector D. Jalender Reddy, the SUV driver, Akun Sabharwal, 19, recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 238 mg per 100 ml, against the permissible limit of 30 mg per 100 ml. Police said Sabharwal was allegedly driving without a valid licence. The SUV reportedly had a temporary registration number and was found displaying a fake number plate. After hitting the car at high speed, the SUV crashed into an electricity pole, which fell onto the vehicle. The injured couple were shifted to a private hospital in Chaitanyapuri for treatment. Police said the incident involved around 10 alleged violations under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including drunken driving, overspeeding and driving without a valid licence. Inspector Reddy said the accident occurred during the early morning hours, when roads were relatively empty due to festival holidays. He added that the consequences could have been more serious had the crash occurred during peak traffic hours. Medipally Police registered a case against Sabharwal and Mangilal, the vehicle owner, who was accused of allowing a person without a valid driving licence to drive the SUV. Sabharwal has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.

The police are still investigating Sabharwal’s involvement and the driver has been arrested and further investigation is ongoing. The collision was an accident that was on the night of March 14, so we’re investigating the facts of the collision and the suspected drunk driving and the alleged drivers involved, the drivers’ behaviour and the vehicle owner’s involvement as well and the police are trying to find out what happened.
A case like this shows how potentially life-or-death drunk driving can have deadly consequences and road safety issues may be deadly if you’re suspected of drunk driving, and that the driver had to follow the law and the rules of the road are not to be broken and road safety laws are very serious and you have to follow them.
