Food safety inspection drive across Nizamabad district in Telangana has revealed serious hygiene violations — cockroach-infested sweets, rodent droppings, expired food products and unhygienic kitchen conditions among others. The TG SAFE suspended the food safety licences of 13 establishments following inspections and asked them to shut down immediately.
Enforcement drive was carried out on November 3, 2026 in 28 food establishments (sweet shops, bakeries, spice manufacturers, restaurants and packaged drinking water units).
Fourteen teams of enforcement officers Food Safety Officers and police personnel conducted the inspections. Officials collected 26 food samples suspected to be adulterated and seized or destroyed 9,645 kg of food articles worth about ₹17.28 lakh.
Cockroaches, Rodent Droppings and Expired Food Found
The inspections uncovered many violations of food preparation, storage and handling. Cockroaches and houseflies were found in food preparation areas; rodent droppings; insects in raw materials; rotten vegetables.
Some establishments were also found storing expired food products; cooked or semi-prepared food without labels; storing food articles on the floor; newspapers covering food items etc. Violations included storage of food articles directly on the floor and using newspapers to cover food items.
The findings raised concerns about contamination risks and hygiene practices at the inspected premises.
Serious Violations Reported at Sweet Shops and Food Units
At Chappan Bhog Sweets officials found rodent and cockroach infestation and insects in sweets. Food handlers were chewing gutka or pan masala while working too.

Quality Sweets and Chikki/KK Sweets was selling expired food articles and products with labelling violations.
These findings were among the violations identified during the district-wide inspection drive.

Notices Issued to More Food Establishments

Show cause notices were issued to 12 establishments for violations found during inspections and three others were asked to fix deficiencies through improvement notices.
Officials said what followed penalties if any would depend on the nature of violations and whether the establishments complied with the directions.
Improvement notices are intended to give establishments an opportunity to correct identified deficiencies and follow up inspections will be used to check compliance.
Food Safety Inspections Intensified Across Telangana
The inspections in Nizamabad are part of wider enforcement by TG SAFE to monitor food safety and hygiene standards across Telangana.
These results show that food storage, pest control, clean preparation areas, licences and hygienic practices among food handlers are needed.
Consumers should buy food from authorised stores and report suspected food safety violations to authorities.
TG SAFE has said that further action will follow on the basis of inspection findings and compliance checks.
