According to the GBA Deputy Director, animal slaughter and the sale of meat have been prohibited on October 2 as part of Gandhi Jayanti. It is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and is a national holiday in India. Gandhi Jayanti falls on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Karnataka.

Animal Slaughter Prohibited on October 2

As a result, slaughterhouses located within the GBA limits will not be allowed to carry out animal slaughter on October 2.

The order covers those that slaughter animals for meat production. The establishments have been advised to comply with the temporary ban on Gandhi Jayanti.

The measure is part of the civic administration’s plans for observing the day and complying with the restrictions traditionally placed on slaughter and meat sales on Gandhi Jayanti.

Meat Shops Also Covered

The restriction is not limited to slaughterhouses. Meat-selling shops located in the GBA jurisdiction will also be prohibited from selling meat on October 2.

That means residents and customers who want to buy meat at the retail outlets in Bengaluru will need to take note of the one-day restriction.

The civic administration has warned that action will be taken against establishments or people who break the order. Meat traders and shop owners are told to abide by the order and to work as per the order on the date listed in order to keep their establishments compliant on this date.

Why is the restriction being imposed?

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. Peace, non-violence, and cleanliness are the messages of this day.

Cities in Bengaluru and other places have imposed restrictions on animal slaughter and meat sales on Gandhi Jayanti in previous years as part of the observance.

The latest directive has been issued specifically for the GBA area and has been issued ahead of the October 2 holiday so that slaughterhouses, meat shops, and consumers are aware of the restrictions.

GBA officials are to monitor compliance

The order has been issued by the Deputy Director in charge of the GBA administration. Compliance with it will be tracked across the civic body’s jurisdiction.

Slaughterhouses and meat shops will be required to follow the order on October 2. Violations will be taken seriously by authorities if they are found, officials said.

The directive is therefore expected to affect both wholesale and retail activity related to meat on the specified day.

What should Bengaluru residents know?

For residents, the key point is that October 2 will be a no-slaughter and no-meat-sale day within the GBA limits, according to the civic order.

People who usually buy meat from local shops should plan accordingly, and meat traders and shop owners have been advised to ensure their establishments comply with the restriction.

The restriction is limited to the date specified in the order. There will be regular slaughtering and meat-sale activities, and their rules and permissions will apply outside of the restricted period.

Gandhi Jayanti is also a public holiday in Karnataka on October 2, 2026.

The GBA’s latest directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with the Gandhi Jayanti restrictions across Bengaluru. Violations of the order could result in action, authorities have said.
