Some claims suggest that the lights were switched off by the Bangladeshi side as part of an alleged attempt to facilitate infiltration into Indian territory, while others allege that personnel on the Indian side switched off the lights in an attempt to push back people infiltrating into India.

Reports from Bangladeshi media have primarily attributed the alleged incident to the Indian Border Security Force (BSF), claiming that the lights were switched off as part of an alleged attempt to push people into Bangladeshi territory. The allegations have not been independently established, and there has been no publicly reported response from the BSF specifically addressing this incident.

According to local reports, the incident took place at around 7:30–8:00 pm on Tuesday, Nov 3, near border pillar number 832, close to the 2-S sub-pillar in the Bangherbari area, Ward No. 6, under Burimari Union in Patgram Upazila of Lalmonirhat district, Bangladesh.

India has been continuously concerned with the infiltration and illegal movement of immigrants and illegal items from Bangladesh to across the country. As attempts to capture and deport people have been stepped up.

Repeated Tensions Along the India-Bangladesh Border

Incidents like these are not new to the region. The India-Bangladesh border has witnessed repeated tensions, including allegations of unauthorised cross-border movement, attempted push-ins and confrontations between the border forces of the two countries.

Earlier, on Oct 18, 2026, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) alleged that the BSF had attempted to push 12 people, including women and children, into Bangladesh near the Burimari-Bamandol border in Lalmonirhat. The incident reportedly took place near border pillar 838/1, where BGB personnel intervened and resisted the alleged attempt. The BGB subsequently said it had lodged a protest and sought a flag meeting with the BSF.

Locals Raise Security Concerns

Residents in the border areas reportedly remain concerned about their safety, with some saying they are sleeping cautiously and staying alert following the incident.

Locals fear that switching off border security lights could make unauthorised cross-border movement easier and increase the possibility of criminal activities in the area.

The sudden loss of visibility along a sensitive international boundary has added to the anxiety of residents, who depend on border surveillance and security arrangements for their safety.

While the circumstances surrounding the latest incident remain disputed, the concerns raised by residents highlight the importance of maintaining proper surveillance and communication between the border forces of both countries.
