A 23-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend after he took her to an isolated spot near Gokak Falls in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. Rakshita Sarikar was strangled and assaulted to death. Police have arrested Basappa Satannanavar, a constable with Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in connection with the case.
Rakshita belonged to Harugeri village and had been in a relationship with Basappa for nearly four years. They knew each other well and were in love for several years.
Woman Allegedly Killed Near Gokak Falls
Police said that on October 28, Basappa allegedly took Rakshita out on the pretext of spending time with her. He allegedly took her to an isolated place near Gokak Falls and assaulted and strangled her there.
Later, Rakshita was found dead near the waterfall. This news worried her family members, so they started searching for her.
After the incident, Basappa returned home but did not tell what had happened to him. He was said to have behaved normally after returning home while Rakshita’s family continued looking for her.
Brother Files Missing Complaint
Since Rakshita was not found, her brother also joined the search. When they could not find her, he went to the police and filed a missing-person complaint.
Harugeri police reportedly questioned Basappa about Rakshita’s disappearance during the investigation. He was allegedly involved in it during the probe.
Basappa confessed to killing Rakshita when questioned by police. He was arrested in connection with the murder later on.
Police Investigation Underway
A murder case has been registered at Gokak Town Police Station. The police are investigating how the alleged killing took place; what happened on October 28 and where the accused went after the incident.
The fact that the accused and the victim had reportedly been in a relationship for four years is also part of the probe. Investigators are also looking at the sequence of events leading up to Rakshita’s disappearance and her body being found.
