Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu has crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast near Ongole and is bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to several districts. The cyclone made landfall early on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) and is moving north-northwest over land.
The IMD has said that the system is likely to weaken gradually but heavy rain, waterlogging and strong winds are still a concern in parts of Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Cyclone Murasu Makes Landfall Near Ongole
The landfall process started at 1 AM on November 3 and was completed between 3:30 AM to 5:30 AM IST, said IMD.
The severe cyclonic storm crossed south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur (near Ongole) with sustained wind speeds of 100–110 kmph and gusts up to 120 kmph.
The storm was centred near Ongole around 5:30 AM (40 km southwest of Bapatla). It passed through the coastal areas and disrupted normal life in several places.
Where Is Cyclone Murasu Heading Next?
At the latest update (10:30 AM on November 3) Murasu was centred near Ongole and moving north-northwest at about 8 kmph.
The IMD said the system would weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon on Tuesday and further into a deep depression by midnight.
This means the cyclone will weaken as it moves inland but its rain bands and strong winds could still affect parts of Andhra Pradesh and nearby regions.
Andhra Pradesh Faces Heavy Rainfall and Waterlogging
Several districts have received heavy rainfall due to Murasu. Vijayawada reported waterlogging on Bandar Road and Polyclinic Road while parts of One Town were also flooded which made it difficult for commuters.
Prakasam district received heavy rainfall. Naguluppalapadu recorded around 198 mm rainfall and Kothapatnam more than 182 mm in the reported 24 hours rainfall period.
The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy showers at isolated places over Bapatla, Guntur, Krishna, Palnadu, NTR Eluru and West Godavari districts.
Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Odisha Also on Alert
The cyclone’s wider weather impact is being felt beyond coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD had earlier forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Telangana with isolated extremely heavy rainfall on November 3. Tamil Nadu and southern Odisha have also been put under weather alerts.
People living in low lying areas should be aware of flooding, waterlogging and transport disruption
#CycloneMurasu Update 4🌀 Murasu is a personal case study on how unpredictable Cyclones can be! From a nonexistent eyewall barely sustaining winds of 90 kmph yesterday morning, Murasu underwent an unexpected remarkable round of significant intensification, barely 45 km off the coast post noon into a Severe Cyclone with winds of 120-130 kmph gusting 140 and pressure dropping to 975 mb! Murasu fought back and was likely aided by moisture feed being funneled into the #Ongole Bay area, a geography that insulated the core from the Dry Air and favored convection. As a result of this intensification, Murasu formed a defined complete eyewall last night around 9pm and also got steered more northwards by the original ridge than the one I expected, resulting in it moving parallel along the coast from Sriharikota to Ongole. Landfall therefore took place 2-7 am on 3rd Nov, at Pallapalem near #Ongole where IMD expected. Murasu has now weakened back into a Cyclonic Storm, and will weaken into a Deep Depression by this evening, and further into a Depression by Wednesday morning. It should track generally northwestwards thru today, then as it weakens further will initiate a westward trajectory and get steered by #NEM easterlies, dissipating as a remnant Low over north Interior Karnataka by 5th Nov.

Rescue and Relief Operations Underway
Three NDRF teams of 90 personnel have been sent to Andhra Pradesh for rescue and relief work in affected areas.
Tamil Nadu has also sent 500 electricity department personnel in 25 teams to help power restoration work in the neighbouring state.
What Should Residents Expect Next?
Even though Murasu is weakening after landfall, the danger from heavy rainfall is not over yet. People should follow district administration instructions, avoid flooded roads and stay away from coastal waters.
The IMD and Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority will continue issuing updates as the system weakens and moves inland. People should not rely on unverified forecasts from social media.
