A case of alleged sexual abuse against a minor boy has come to light in Kozhikode district of Kerala where police arrested one person and probe into involvement of other five is on.
It happened reportedly in Valayam area near Nadapuram. Child safety and protection issues are being raised here.
The survivor is a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly sexually abused on several occasions at various places in Valayam. The accused Majeed (76), a resident of Valayam was arrested by police on Wednesday (November 4).
He was taken into custody by police at Malappuram taluk. Valayam police recorded his arrest later.
Investigators are also looking into the alleged involvement of five other people in the case. Officials said the boy told police six persons had allegedly taken him to different places and sexually abused him. Police have registered multiple cases under POCSO Act in connection with allegations.
How the Incident Came to Light
The family only became aware of the case when the boy refused to go to school. Repeated hesitations worried family members who wanted to know what was wrong with him.
When questioned, the boy allegedly confessed to the abuse. The family went to the police who then investigated.
The police took the boy’s statement and started looking into what had happened. They also arranged a medical examination and counselling so that the survivor could give a full account of what had happened to her.
Investigation Under the POCSO Act
Five FIRs have been registered at Valayam police station and one at Kuttiady police station in connection with the case. The cases have been registered under POCSO Act which gives legal protection to children against sexual offences.
Police are still trying to establish the individual roles of those named in the allegations. They are also looking into tracing and taking action against the remaining five suspects.
The arrest of one accused is an important step in the investigation but several questions remain unanswered because authorities are still gathering evidence and reviewing statements.
Child Safety Remains a Serious Concern
The incident has once again brought to light the need for recognising behavioural changes among children and creating an atmosphere where they can talk about uncomfortable experiences.
Not going to school, sudden changes in behaviour and withdrawal from usual activities can all be warning signs that a child is not coping. Families, teachers and caregivers need to know about such warning signs so children get the help they need.
POCSO Act provides legal framework for dealing with sexual offences against children and protecting survivors throughout investigation and judicial process.
The Kozhikode police are investigating the matter and will take action against those allegedly involved once facts are established. The identity of the minor has not been revealed as it is a child.
