Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing four ventilators from a government hospital in Telangana, raising serious questions about the security of expensive medical equipment at hospitals.
The incident took place at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital in Adilabad where the stolen machines were reportedly worth several lakh rupees.
Police said Sajjan and Abhijit residents of Chandrapur in Maharashtra allegedly entered the hospital posing as medical equipment technicians. They entered hospital wards posing as technicians so that they could get into wards without raising suspicion immediately.
The theft allegedly took place on October 30. The accused went to different sections of the hospital and stole four ventilators — one from RICU, another from chest ward, two more from TB ward.
The equipment was discovered missing when hospital authorities realized that the ventilators were not there. Questions were asked about how expensive and essential medical devices could be taken out of a government hospital despite security arrangements and staff presence.
The RIMS director then complained at Adilabad Two Town Police Station. Police registered a case and started investigation to trace the thieves.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the hospital premises. The recordings reportedly showed two people carrying ventilators in bags when leaving the hospital. This was an important clue to track down the suspects.
Police later traced the accused as Sajjan and Abhijit who allegedly sold the stolen ventilators to a medical equipment dealer Kondareddy from Hyderabad.
Adilabad SP Akhil Mahajan said that the dealer had bought stolen machines in Chandrapur and was carrying them towards Hyderabad when police stopped the vehicle.

All four stolen ventilators were recovered by the police during the operation. A car allegedly used in connection with transportation of equipment was also seized besides Rs one lakh cash.
The arrests and recovery of the medical equipment have made progress in the investigation. Police are also investigating how the stolen machines were sold, if at all, who else may have been involved.
The incident once again emphasized the need for strict security arrangements in government hospitals. Ventilators are life support machines that help patients who cannot breathe on their own. Availability of ventilators can be important in intensive care units and emergency departments.
The theft also raises questions about better monitoring of visitors, verification that technicians are entering hospitals and stronger inventory management of expensive medical equipment.
Although the stolen ventilators have been found, the incident has highlighted security loopholes that could leave hospital resources vulnerable. Authorities need to investigate what happened and take action to prevent thefts like this from happening again.
The case is a reminder that medical equipment needs to be protected in order for healthcare services to continue uninterrupted (especially in government hospitals which serve large numbers of patients).
