Flydubai Flight to Tel Aviv Turns Back Over Saudi Arabia After Emergency Alert

A flydubai Boeing 737 MAX on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv declared an emergency and stopped over northern Saudi Arabia (see flight-tracking data). A sudden change in the aircraft's flight path raised questions over what happened during the flight, but the cause of the emergency has not yet been confirmed.

The plane was heading towards Tel Aviv when its flight path changed over northern Saudi Arabia. Tracking data showed the plane turning away from Israel and returning in the opposite direction. The plane was last seen near Tabuk Airport before vanishing from publicly available flight-tracking databases.

According to sources, about 180 passengers were on board the plane. The condition of passengers and crew was not clear from the information available.

Plane Squawked Emergency Code 7700

One of the interesting facts which emerged from the flight-tracking data was that the aircraft had transponder code 7700. The code is the general emergency squawk used by airline personnel to alert air traffic controllers that the plane is in need of attention.

The flight data also indicated changes in altitude and speed before it turned away from its destination. The aircraft experienced a sudden drop in altitude, and its ground speed fluctuated, they said. After turning around, the plane was seen flying at approximately 15,000 feet, which is very low for the route, they said.

These changes in flight parameters added to the uncertainty surrounding the incident. But flight tracking data alone cannot establish whether an emergency was caused by a technical problem, a medical situation, a security issue or another issue.

Reports of Possible 7500 Signal Not Confirmed

Some flight-tracking services indicated that the aircraft may have transmitted transponder code 7500 briefly. The code is internationally associated with unlawful interference or a suspected hijacking.

But the 7500 signal was not confirmed. A brief or erroneous transponder signal does not, of itself, confirm an aircraft has been hijacked. Further verification from aviation authorities, the airline or other official sources would be required to establish what actually happened.

And reports also indicated that verification was ongoing to determine if the incident was related to a security issue or a technical problem.

The distinction is important because several possible causes can lead an aircraft crew to declare an emergency and change its route. A 7700 transmission simply indicates a general emergency and does not identify the nature of the problem.

Israeli Fighter Jets Reportedly Scrambled

The Times of Israel, citing security forces, reported that Israeli Air Force fighter jets had been scrambled towards the aircraft. The same report said Israeli Prime Minister and Defence Minister were holding emergency consultations, according to Hebrew media.

These reports came as the aircraft was turned away from Tel Aviv and moving over northern Saudi Arabia. But the available information did not establish the precise reason for the reported military response or confirm that the aircraft was a security threat.

The plane subsequently disappeared from flight-tracking websites after being last seen near Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

Why did the Flydubai plane turn back?

The exact reason for the flydubai aircraft turning back remains unclear based on the information given. The plane declared a general emergency, changed its flight path and was observed flying at a lower altitude before turning away from Tel Aviv.

Aviation authorities and the airline would need to provide further information to determine if a technical failure of the aircraft, medical emergency, security concerns or other factors would be involved in the incident to determine whether this would be considered due to a technical problem, a medical emergency or another reason.

The reports come at a sensitive time for aviation in the region as a whole and several operational notices and restrictions have been issued on parts of the Tel Aviv flight information region. Airlines operating routes through the Middle East have had a much greater focus on it because of the wider security environment.

For passengers and aviation observers, the use of the 7700 emergency code and the sudden turnaround from the plane were the most obvious signs that something unusual had occurred.

Until the authorities give further details on this incident, speculation of a hijacking or security incident should be treated cautiously. The 7500 signal reported was not confirmed but the emergency announcement and way of flight were recorded on flight tracking.

Additional information from flydubai, aviation authorities and security officials will be required to determine why the flight turned back and what happened to the passengers and crew on board the aircraft after it diverted from the planned route to Tel Aviv.
