Adidas has been divesting technology employees in India - especially in the Gurgaon centre. It happened after a town hall meeting on 15 September 2026 and people reported that employees were divided in different groups and were put on a different pathway.
Adidas subsequently said it had eliminated some technology positions in India as part of a move to simplify operations. The company said the impact was less than 20% of the overall India Technology organisation, but did not disclose the exact number of affected employees.
Reports of the Gurgaon technology hub have also given more details about how employees were informed. According to media reports, some employees got exit letters following the restructuring announcement and some were told that they would remain with the company until December 15, which has led to a lot of discussion about the message from employees that the time before the deadline to look for another job.
The Gurgaon technology hub reported to have around 700 employees and that the restructuring might impact a significant number of them, but Adidas said the higher numbers have not been confirmed by Adidas.
Software engineers, data scientists and data engineers are among those impacted, as are software engineers, data scientists and data engineers and those jobs are all part of Adidas' technology and engineering capacity and support its global operation. Adidas has insisted that the changes are driven by changing business requirements, and in an effort to streamline the way it operates.
Adidas said the reduction was in its India Technology organisation and described it as part of the company’s efforts to simplify operations. Adidas has not publicly provided a breakdown of the roles or personnel numbers impacted.
The December 15 date is significant because it is not that some employees were asked to quit right now; they were told to transition before the end of the employment. In this way impacted employees would have time to get better prepared for the next job and career change, reports say. The situation also shows how restructuring exercises can cover different stages in process for employees based on what their roles are and what they do.
But the specific terms of the individual employee’s emails or separation documents are different and publicly available reports do not indicate whether all affected employees received the same message.
Adidas’ technology operations in India are now an integral part of its digital and technology network. The company operates technology hubs in Gurgaon and Chennai, and its website shows that there are nearly 650 people working in those locations. Reuters quoted that using that figure, less than 20% of the India Technology organisation would mean that only about 130 jobs have been affected, but Adidas has not publicly disclosed the exact number.
The Gurgaon hub being the key to the effect has been identified by other sources and that estimates of the impact on the company are much higher than it is reported, and therefore not as big as the company’s official estimate.
Adidas’ restructuring is in line with continued changes in the technology employment landscape in the world as companies are reviewing their organisational structure, technology investments and needs for talent. For employees, the December 15 deadline is critical for the transition period due to end and moving out of the company as they are looking for new jobs and are looking for new places to get the job.
Adidas tells the world that it is to be the way Adidas will do so in alignment to its technology organisation with the needs of the company and simplify work in business and to its new technology organisation. How many employees will be affected and what will be the future of the India technology organisation after the restructuring is done?
