Amazon plans to eliminate 16,000 jobs internationally, its second massive cut in just three months. It is a move that follows a wider restructuring effort intended to mitigate pandemic-era over-hiring and respond to the higher use of artificial intelligence tools throughout many of its business operations.
HR head Beth Galetti, as part of the reorganization plan, said the majority of workers in the U.S. who would receive such work cuts will be given 90 days to search for internal positions with the company. There's not the same rule for employees across the globe; but for employees in other nations that will depend on local regulations and employment laws of the particular nation.
Those who leave will have severance, outplacement services and health care benefits as suitable, the company adds. The goal is to ease the transition for impacted workers and maintain Amazon's strong commitment to its employees during this time of restructuring.
Amazon’s decision, industry analysts point out, is part of a broad trend facing tech giants, many of whom have begun recalibrating their workforce after growing quickly during the pandemic. And the adoption of AI-powered efficiencies has forced the organization to scale back roles for those functions altogether, reshaping how the company operates.
