Discipline vs Motivation: Why Consistency Is the Real Key to Success

Why Discipline is More Critical Than Motivation to Success. From different cultures to industries, one thing is very much the same: lasting success is based on discipline — not inspiration. Even though motivation can encourage people to start off a pursuit, discipline is the motivator that allows them to continue the road, not just when barriers loom. Emotions, the environment and situations frequently affect motivation. It is strong, but it is fleeting.

A person is as energized one day as de-energized the next. Then without motivation if what the goal is does not depend entirely on it  progress can be inconsistent. That’s why a lot of people get going and do well but have difficulty keeping that momentum high. Discipline, in contrast, ensures stability. It is to take action without regard to feelings or exterior surroundings.

Whether in learning, work, life, music, sporting, health, or self-improvement, disciplined routines are consistent with good results. Tasks like making deadlines, practicing skills, and sticking to routines make the everyday things that the child does become a solid basis for long-term success.

In today’s rapidly-changing world, discipline is particularly important. Professionals, entrepreneurs, students and leaders all across the world are under perpetual pressure to change and perform.

Those who thrive, are almost always not the most inspired, but can sometimes be the ones that maintain consistency. But history shows that great achievements are seldom an accident of momentary excitement. They derive from patience, routine and the desire to persist when motivation gives up. Disciplined ambition is converted into quantifiable outcomes. Motivation may begin but discipline is there to complete the journey. For all true and sustainable success, discipline is the real competitive edge.
