Palm Sunday is one of the key days of the Christian calendar and the beginning of Holy Week, the last part of Lent, the triumphant coming of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem. Christians go out there in churches throughout the world to celebrate this day in palms, prayers and blessings to prepare spiritually for Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Palm Sunday: The Palm Sunday story story
According to the Bible, Jesus came down the road on a donkey to Jerusalem, fulfilling the prophecy that the Messiah would come in humility. He was welcomed with palm branches and cloaks planted along the road to exclaim “Hosanna to our Son of David!” That ceremony demonstrated Jesus as king and Savior. Palms were the symbol for victory and the peace and life on earth. And so too the donkey: humble and calm rather than so much military.

- Palm leaves or local substitutes of olive or coconut leaves are carried by the congregation.
- Blessing of Palms: Priests bless the palms and take them home to be kept as sacred tokens in a palm.
- Readings and hymns: Gospels recount Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem, and hymns like “Hosanna” are sung.
- Preparations for Holy Week: The day sets the tone for the solemn observances of Good Friday along with the joyous Easter.
In different traditions, leftover palms are burned and the ashes used for the following year’s Ash Wednesday services.
