Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2025: December 30 or 31? Know the Correct Date, Parana Timings and Rituals

The year 2025 concludes with one of the most significant spiritual events in the Hindu calendar: Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Also known as Mukkoti Ekadashi in South India, this day is dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu. It is believed that on this day, the gates of Vaikuntha (Lord Vishnu's celestial abode) swing open for all devotees who observe the fast with pure devotion.

Date Confusion: December 30 or 31?

There has been significant discussion regarding whether the fast should be observed on December 30 or December 31. According to the Vedic Panchang and the Udaya Tithi (the tithi prevailing at sunrise), the primary observance in India is as follows:

  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: December 30, 2025, at 7:50 AM
  • Ekadashi Tithi Ends: December 31, 2025, at 5:00 AM
  • Main Vrat Date: Tuesday, December 30, 2025

While the Tithi ends early on the 31st, the Udaya Tithi on the 30th makes it the most auspicious day for starting the fast. However, certain Vaishnava traditions (including some ISKCON centers) may observe the fast on December 31 depending on their specific calculation of the sunrise and Nakshatra.

Parana (Fast-Breaking) Timings

Breaking the fast at the correct time is essential to reap the full spiritual benefits of the Vrat.

For Those Fasting On Parana Date Parana Time Window
December 30 (Smartha) Dec 31, 2025 1:26 PM to 3:31 PM
December 31 (Vaishnava) Jan 1, 2026 7:14 AM to 9:18 AM

Note: For Smartha devotees on the 31st, the fast should be broken after the 'Hari Vasara' period ends at 10:12 AM.

Significance of Vaikuntha Ekadashi

According to the Padma Purana, the female energy of Lord Vishnu, named "Ekadashi," defeated the demon Muran on this day. Pleased with her, the Lord declared that anyone who fasts on this specific day would be granted entry through the Vaikuntha Dwaram (the gateway to heaven) and attain Moksha (liberation).

The Power of One Fast: It is believed that observing the Vaikuntha Ekadashi fast is equivalent to fasting on all other 23 Ekadashis of the year combined.

Sacred Rituals to Follow

  1. Brahmamuhurta Snana: Wake up during the auspicious Brahmamuhurta (approx. 1.5 hours before sunrise) and take a holy dip.
  2. Vaikuntha Dwar Darshan: Visit a Vishnu temple. Many temples, like those in Tirupati and Srirangam, create a special "North Gate" or Vaikuntha Dwara. Walking through this gate is a highlight of the day.
  3. Tulsi Puja: Lord Vishnu is exceptionally fond of Tulsi. Offer Tulsi leaves (harvested the day before) and light a ghee lamp near the plant. Avoid watering the Tulsi plant today, as it is believed Mata Tulsi herself is fasting.
  4. Chanting: Recite the Vishnu Sahasranamam (1000 names of Vishnu) or the Hare Krishna Mahamantra throughout the day and night.
  5. Night Vigil (Jagran): Stay awake during the night of the 30th, singing bhajans or reading scriptures to show your dedication.
