The year 2025 concludes with one of the most significant spiritual events in the Hindu calendar: Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Also known as Mukkoti Ekadashi in South India, this day is dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu. It is believed that on this day, the gates of Vaikuntha (Lord Vishnu's celestial abode) swing open for all devotees who observe the fast with pure devotion.
Date Confusion: December 30 or 31?
There has been significant discussion regarding whether the fast should be observed on December 30 or December 31. According to the Vedic Panchang and the Udaya Tithi (the tithi prevailing at sunrise), the primary observance in India is as follows:
- Ekadashi Tithi Begins: December 30, 2025, at 7:50 AM
- Ekadashi Tithi Ends: December 31, 2025, at 5:00 AM
- Main Vrat Date: Tuesday, December 30, 2025
While the Tithi ends early on the 31st, the Udaya Tithi on the 30th makes it the most auspicious day for starting the fast. However, certain Vaishnava traditions (including some ISKCON centers) may observe the fast on December 31 depending on their specific calculation of the sunrise and Nakshatra.
