Buffett insists a lot of people attribute his success not just to his investment strategies and disciplined decision-making and business acumen but also to his father and longtime business associate Charlie Munger and that people in his life, his father and business partner, Charlie Munger.

Buffett has always said that a lot of his success is because of what his father, Howard Buffett, instilled in him. His father taught him integrity, honesty, patience, and the necessity of moral decisions, Buffett said.

This philosophy and leadership style have been the bedrock of Buffett’s investing philosophy and business philosophy.

Another person Buffett is incredibly proud of is Charlie Munger, Berkshire Hathaway’s vice chairman, who passed away in 2023. Buffett has often referred to Munger as the architect of his investment evolution.

Buffett initially took a value-investing approach inspired by Benjamin Graham but Munger was telling him to invest in companies that were good long-term and could be great and that had the best chances to grow instead of buying cheap stocks.

Buffett has admitted that Munger helped him to “buy wonderful businesses at fair prices instead of fair businesses at wonderful prices.” Berkshire Hathaway became one of the world's most successful investment companies with stakes in giants like Apple, Coca-Cola, American Express, and many more.

Besides Munger (and his father), Buffett is also well-known to recognize Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing. Graham, Buffett's professor at Columbia Business School and author of The Intelligent Investor, taught him the importance of disciplined investing, analyzing intrinsic value and emotional control during market fluctuations.

In addition to mentors, Buffett believes that success is heavily influenced by the quality of the people you surround yourself with. He would recommend that young people associate with individuals who possess integrity, intelligence, and positive attitudes.

Buffett thinks that the people you know can influence your habits, decision-making, and ultimately your future.

Another central theme in Buffett’s lectures is the need for lifelong learning. He reads books, newspapers, financial reports, and annual filings for hours a day and is famous for it. Buffett believes that continuous learning compounds over time, just like investments, helping individuals make better decisions throughout their careers.

Buffett is rich but still has a humble lifestyle and he values character more than money. He often tells students that reputation takes decades to build but can be destroyed in minutes, and that honesty and trustworthiness matter greatly.

In a message for aspiring entrepreneurs and investors, Buffett’s message is clear success is rarely achieved alone.

It is not only a matter of luck and shortcuts you need good mentors, supportive relationships, ethical values, continuous learning, and disciplined decision-making. Buffett’s story is a great example of how these elements contribute to success.
