Lawsuits clouding things are darkening in Bollywood's legal future. Another top figure in this direction is now the object of legal scrutiny from court. Just days after actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered himself at Tihar Jail because of a debt of ₹9 crore, a non-bailable warrant (NBW) has been issued against actress Ameesha Patel by the Moradabad Additional Civil Judge (Junior Division) court.
The 2017 Wedding Conflict
The situation goes back to November 2017, when event planner Pawan Verma filed suit against the organizer and alleged that he broke contractually to defraud it by using his own account book. According to the complaint:
Patel was allegedly paid an advance of ₹11 lakh to perform at a high-profile wedding in Moradabad. The actress reportedly did not attend, which is a major financial and reputational loss to the organizer. After talks took place, Patel supposedly provided them with ₹10 lakh in cash. Nonetheless, when he sent to her the balance, Patel deposited a cheque; after this, an NBW was issued that bounced into their account.
Explanation
After her non-appearance at a number of court hearings, which only took place on February 16, 2026, the court’s non-bailable warrant was issued against this actress. Even with several summonses, the same judge would be unable to prevent the absence of Patel over the years, taking a tougher approach to guaranteeing her a seat at the courtroom. Under these circumstances, if the actress takes the stand if she fails to appear before the court with the presence of the police at their next planned court date.
Ameesha’s Answer: “Old and Settled.”
This was the reason for the arrest by the police. Ameesha Patel, breaking her silence online, called the proceedings "false and misleading". She said in an Instagram story:
"This is a very old matter where the said Pawan Verma had signed a settlement deed and received the full amount agreed years ago. My lawyers have now started criminal prosecution for cheating against this person as part of his efforts to expose his lies."
Her lawyers insist that the charge is meant to garner attention against a star.
A Tough Month for Bollywood
This should come at a moment when the game is reeling from Rajpal Yadav's recent surrender. Yadav was given a short interim bail on 16 Feb to attend a family wedding, but needs to be returned to custody by 18 March unless a permanent settlement is made. The two cases illustrate the wider judiciary’s growing intolerance of non-compliance on account of a non-payment due to the Negotiable Instruments Act.
