As soon as its teaser was out, ‘BOSS’ immediately triggered a buzz among Kannada film industry professionals on parallels between the story behind the movie and real case of the actor Darshan itself. Speculation arose that the movie could be linked with the well-studied Renukaswamy murder case and is purported to be related to Darshan in the media.

Legal Objections and Controversy

Darshan’s legal firm came up to court against his film’s release, and argue that the film was reminiscent to incidents of real life which would affect the actor’s reputation even further. Notices were sent to the director and censor board of the Film-Production Committee warning them not to do certification.

Darshan’s wife Vijayalakshmi Darshan and his brother Dinakar Thoogudeepa were also reported to have approached the censor board directly; seeking to deny him clearance. These actions put the issue into the legal spotlight, making it one of all the most hot issues going on in recent times.

Censor Board Decision

Still, the film was censored and it went quiet and got the U/A certificate. But the board required the filmmakers to change or edit certain aspects of the film, such as scenes and dialogue they felt might be sensitive or controversial (see for references).

This decision allows the movie to head towards release - albeit at certain moments and in some altered form. And the board found the content acceptable for public viewing with parental guidance in mind so that at least in some places the issues around the themes around its content is not going anywhere.

What Lies Ahead

With the censor’s decision made over, the makers of ‘BOSS’ have now turned their attention to promotional activities. Karnataka will see the film in April and there is a ton of hype for it based on how much it has seen before.

Where the controversy will go will there be a box office success? And if many are looking for the film because of the buzz and still feel it’s not connected to the real world events because the movie is supposedly based on nothing so much.

The controversy from Boss is still around and so the movie’s release is one of the highest profile event at the present stage. We all know in advance which is what will be seen of the film and the hype in its turbulent trajectory as well as how audiences can go wild on it at the time when the movie should be released.
