The production house KVN Productions has decided to withdraw a writ petition from the Madras High Court and it is a milestone moment for the long-awaited Tamil film Jana Nayagan. The move will effectively settle a month-long legal fight with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and pave the way for the film to be examined by a nine-person Revising Committee (RC).
Today the makers' legal advocate, Advocate Vijayan Subramanian, filed a formal letter with the High Court registry. The issue will be heard “for withdrawal” before Justice P.T. Asha on Tuesday, February 10.
The Conflict and Delay
On January 9th, Jana Nayagan – the widely celebrated final flick of Thalapathy Vijay’s final and highest point of view, before he entered India with full-blown political agenda as part of his release in the film industry – stalled after being issued with a premature certificate.
- 19 Dec 2025: The Examining Committee had initially recommended a U/A 16+ certificate with 14 cuts.
- The Snag: A complaint was filed for approval from an Advisory Panel Member that the movie's Army references and portrayals of the theme of religious battles sparked by foreign nations may disturb societal peace and was lacking consulting a defense specialist. January 5, 2026, CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi referred the film to the Revising Committee, which led makers looking for swift judicial intervention.
The Road to Release
After the Madras High Court Division Bench had recently overturned a single-judge order that had briefly given the producer an instant certification, the producers were afforded the choice of either moving their petition or to enter the Supreme Court. And by opting out and using the familiar CBFC review process, the filmmakers are showing a willingness to resolve the dispute before a legal wrangle in favour of a rapid release on the screen.
Directed by H. Vinoth, the political action thriller stars Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Prakash Raj and includes music from Anirudh Ravichander. Industry sources recently announced that the team would now be expecting a February 20 release with a scheduled release before the Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule could be announced.
