The fire started on the upper floors of the residential building. The fire was initially classified as a Level-1 fire and Mumbai Fire Brigade sent several emergency response vehicles to the spot immediately.

As soon as the firefighters arrived at the building they began to try and control it and find out how much of the building was on fire. The emergency crews had to go up to the upper floors of the 25 storey building.

Later reports said the fire started on the 23rd floor and was upgraded to Level II. The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Three people were injured in the incident.

Fire incidents in high-rise residential buildings are extra challenges for emergency services because firefighters have to overcome difficulties accessing upper floors; controlling the spread of flames and smoke; residents leaving safely from the building.

Evacuation of residents is especially important in such situations. People living in high-rise buildings are generally told to listen to emergency personnel and use staircases instead of lifts during a fire.

The incident has also brought into focus the importance of fire safety arrangements in Mumbai’s residential towers functional fire alarms, extinguishers, sprinkler systems, emergency exits and regular safety inspections all help to reduce risk during unexpected fire incidents.

For buildings with several floors accessible evacuation routes need to be available and firefighting equipment needs to be operational. Residents should also know where emergency exits are located and safety procedures so that confusion doesn’t occur during such incidents.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade’s emergency vehicles showed how serious the situation was at Kukreja Palace. Firefighters battled the blaze and managed the emergency in the residential complex.

Meanwhile we don’t know what caused the fire or how much property was damaged. Officials should release more information as soon as they have it.

This incident is yet another reminder of fire prevention and emergency preparedness in Mumbai’s high-rise residential areas, where a lot of people live in one building.
