Pandey said that regardless of her criticism of the government and political leaders, she was not an enemy of the party but a daughter of Jharkhand. He also criticised the BJP for engaging in politics during what he described as a sorrowful time and appealed to people to trust the police investigation.

Speaking on the incident, Pandey said, "This is a deeply tragic and unfortunate incident. A tribal daughter, a daughter of Jharkhand, is no longer with us. Regardless of her criticisms of the government or political leaders, she was certainly not our enemy; she was a daughter of Jharkhand. The police are conducting an impartial investigation into the entire matter. What is even more distressing is that the BJP chooses to engage in politics even during such tragic and sorrowful times. I heard the BJP State President and the LoP demand an FIR, a formal case, and a CBI inquiry. Her statement mentioned certain names; in fact, the RSS and the BJP were also named. She even remarked that no one offered her any support or stood by her. Nevertheless, everyone should place their full trust in the police administration; a preliminary report is expected within the next few days..."

Tribal activist Nisha Bhagat dies by suicide after Facebook Live

Tribal rights activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat, 38, died by suicide in Ranchi on Nov 6, after broadcasting an approximately 11-minute Facebook Live session in which she spoke about alleged harassment, online trolling and the lack of support she had received.

During the livestream, Bhagat appeared visibly distressed and said that nobody had stood by her despite her efforts to fight for tribal rights. She also addressed online accusations calling her a BJP dalal (broker), denying the allegations and expressing disappointment that neither the BJP nor the RSS had supported her despite her expectations.

She accused Chief Minister Hemant Soren's government and alleged land mafias of being involved in the acquisition of tribal land across different police station jurisdictions. She also questioned the Pithoria police's response to an earlier burglary complaint and the alleged harassment she said she had been facing.

During the livestream, she contacted the Pithoria police station officer-in-charge and informed him about her distress and intentions. The officer reportedly suggested that she visit the police station. When she informed him that the conversation was being broadcast live on Facebook, the call was abruptly disconnected.

Bhagat also spoke about her parents, saying that her father had been an activist and social worker who had raised her with care and hope. She expressed regret over the pain her death would cause them and spoke about having devoted her life to the betterment of society.

According to Ranchi police, she had also contacted several people, including her parents, before her death. Police reached her residence and took her to the hospital, where she was declared dead. Her body was sent to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for a post-mortem examination.

VHP demands independent investigation

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded a CBI investigation into Bhagat's death, alleging that land mafias and religious conversion networks were involved in the circumstances surrounding her death.

The organisation's national spokesperson, Vinod Bansal, alleged that her campaign against land mafias and Christian missionary activities had made her a target of certain elements.

Bhagat was known for her strong views on tribal identity, the Sarna faith and religious conversion. She had supported the demand that tribal people who convert to Christianity or Islam should be removed from the Scheduled Tribes list, a politically contested demand that she had publicly advocated.

Opposition demands CBI probe and Hemant Soren's resignation

Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi has demanded a CBI investigation into the incident, calling for strict action against everyone named by Bhagat.

Marandi alleged that Chief Minister Hemant Soren and people involved in land dealings were responsible for the circumstances surrounding her death. He also demanded that Soren resign, alleging that the state government had failed to protect tribal activists and address their complaints.

Marandi further called for the arrest of the Pithoria police station officer-in-charge and Ajay Tirkey, both of whom Bhagat had reportedly named in her allegations.

The police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of her death, including the allegations made during the livestream and her reported communication with the police. A forensic examination of the scene and a post-mortem examination have also been reported.
