The rain brought down temperatures in Delhi after a period of warm weather. However, it also caused concerns about traffic congestion during the morning commute.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi early on Monday morning, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Waterlogging was reported near Mahipalpur Flyover and Jhandewalan Temple, among other locations.

Waterlogging Observed Near Mahipalpur Flyover

Waterlogging was observed around Mahipalpur Flyover after the heavy rainfall. According to visuals shared by ANI on October 12, water had accumulated along a stretch of road near the flyover. Cars and motorcycles were seen navigating the affected area as commuters dealt with the impact of the downpour.

Mahipalpur is an important route for commuters travelling to and from the airport and other parts of southwest Delhi. Water accumulation on roads can slow down vehicles and make it difficult for motorists to navigate affected stretches safely.

Waterlogging was also reported near Jhandewalan Temple in Karol Bagh. Rainfall affected other parts of the city as thunderstorms moved across the capital.

Sudden and intense showers can create difficulties for commuters, particularly when rainwater accumulates on busy roads during peak travel hours. Such conditions can also increase the risk of accidents.

IMD Issues Red Alert For Delhi Amid Heavy Rainfall

The IMD issued a red alert for all 11 districts of Delhi on October 12. The warning, issued through an early-morning nowcast, was valid from 6 AM to 9 AM.

The department forecast thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds reaching speeds of around 60 kmph and heavy rainfall across the area. It also predicted moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR over the following two to three hours.

The IMD advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions. It recommended avoiding shelter under trees or weak structures during thunderstorms, checking road and traffic conditions, staying away from flood-prone areas and following official instructions.

The heavy rainfall brought cloudy skies and cooler weather to Delhi-NCR, providing some relief from the preceding warm conditions.

Rainfall Affects Several Parts Of Delhi-NCR

Rainfall was reported in several parts of Delhi-NCR, including areas around Mahipalpur Flyover, Jhandewalan Temple, Janpath Road, Kartavya Path and RK Puram.

Water accumulation on roads can reduce vehicle speeds and increase the likelihood of traffic congestion. Low-lying stretches may experience longer delays when drainage systems are unable to clear rainwater quickly.

The rainfall also disrupted the morning routines of people travelling to offices, schools and other destinations. Commuters were advised to account for possible delays and check road conditions before starting their journeys.

The IMD also issued weather warnings for parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, while orange alerts were issued for some areas of the National Capital Region.

Cooler Weather Expected After Morning Downpour

The rainfall brought a change in weather conditions across Delhi. According to weather reports, temperatures had declined by around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius over the preceding 24 hours.

The IMD forecast that daytime temperatures could remain in the low to mid-30s Celsius over the following few days. Partly cloudy skies were expected after the morning spell, with no significant rainfall forecast over the next several days.

However, weather conditions can change, and residents should continue to follow the latest IMD forecasts and warnings.

Commuters Advised To Check Road Conditions

Waterlogging near Mahipalpur Flyover and other parts of Delhi highlights the need for commuters to exercise caution during heavy rainfall.

Motorists should avoid driving through deep or unfamiliar waterlogged stretches and follow traffic directions issued by the police. People travelling towards the airport or through busy parts of the city should check their routes before leaving and allow additional time for their journeys.

Residents should also follow official weather alerts and take precautions when thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast, particularly during periods of reduced visibility.

Although the morning rainfall brought cooler weather to the capital, waterlogging in several areas created difficulties for road users. The situation highlighted the importance of timely weather information, effective drainage systems and traffic management during periods of intense rainfall.
