At least 14 members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were reportedly killed after an explosion produced by unexploded bombs during a military clearing operation, according to local reports.
Some staff were also seriously injured. They were immediately met by emergency responders of every kind at the scene. The explosion took place while Revolutionary Guards personnel were searching for and safely disposing of unexploded ordnance in a conflict zone.
Those bombs erupted unexpectedly and caused mass injury and casualties, officials said. Officials have still not found the exact location of the incident or what the explosives were involved. One reason is that, after handling the unstable munitions, the explosion may have been triggered accidentally, although preliminary examinations indicate otherwise.
Rescue crews and military personnel rushed down to the scene afterwards following the incident. Personnel injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, and security forces isolated the area. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is fundamental to Iran's army and national security operations.
Bombarding by unexploded bombs and remaining explosives poses a grave danger to military-involved and war-stricken areas. They will be doing a thorough investigation of its cause. The victims and the wounded will be released when and if news about them is available.
