A horrific LPG tanker accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district turned a busy highway stretch into a disaster zone when a massive gas leak set off a deadly fire near Sihori Toll Plaza. Four people died in the accident on June 26, and several others were injured on a busy highway section of highways in the region.
The tragedy took place when an LPG tanker leaked while driving through the area near the toll plaza, officials said. The flammable gas rapidly spread and was dangerous to drivers, toll workers and residents at the time, they said.
The resulting inferno caused panic as towering flames and thick black smoke rose high into the sky. CCTV cameras installed around the toll plaza captured the terrifying sequence of events and the chaotic scene. The footage, which has since spread around the world, shows the destruction of the area and the desperate efforts of people to leave.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and fire tenders rushed to the site to contain the flames. However, because LPG is so combustible, firefighters had to deal with the situation carefully and were also in a rush to get out of there. They closed off the affected stretch of the highway to prevent any more casualties, to save lives and also for the rescue missions.
At least four people were killed in the disaster, the first reports of the disaster said. Some victims were trapped by the fire, and others suffered severe burn injuries. Multiple injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
People from close to the toll plaza told journalists of panic as the explosion-like fireball erupted. Drivers fled and ran for safety, and residents were horrified as the flames consumed everything in their path. The fire also damaged homes and vehicles parked close to the accident site, according to local media.
Authorities are also investigating why the LPG leak occurred. Mechanical failure, valve failure, maintenance issue, or other technical fault could have been the cause of the accident, experts say. Safety measures of the tanker operator are also under investigation as investigators seek to find the cause.
It has once more raised fears about the transportation of hazardous materials on India’s highways. Safety checks, regular vehicle inspections and better emergency response mechanisms are required to prevent such tragedies, experts said.
Local administration officials praised the firefighters, police and rescue services for the work of firefighters and police officers who battled the fire and evacuated people from the danger zone. Firefighters were also closely monitoring the area after the fire was extinguished to make sure that there was no chance of re-ignition.
The Kaushambi tanker tragedy serves as a stark illustration of the hazards of transporting highly flammable substances. Safety measures will be reviewed, and the monitoring systems to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future should be strengthened.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have assured the public that all aspects of the accident will be thoroughly examined to ensure accountability.
