At least 16 people were killed and others injured in a deadly road accident when a passenger bus struck a fuel tanker in Sumatra, Indonesia, the police said. It happened on a busy road, where the fuel tanker, believed to be carrying fuel, started a massive blaze. And minutes later, the vehicles caught fire, and the bus was packed.
After their impact, the vehicles were set on fire. Witnesses said they shattered into panic pandemonium as that black smoke whipped over their heads. Fire departments sprang to the scene, fighting flames, attempting to save lives. The flaming, violent spread of flames made rescue almost impossible. Dozens died on the scene, often with wounds as they fled to nearby hospitals.
Relief / Rescue efforts underway
Firefighters and the local forces’ medical teams launched a rescue. Hospitalisation of victims had become desperate, some even in the grips of potentially deadly burns. Traffic was diverted to a safe location; police on the scene closed the road, traffic was controlled and searches continued.

Cause of Crash Under Investigation
The reason for the crash was not known, and officials did not make this public. They are also looking into drivers’ fatigue, other factors, road conditions and probable mechanical failure. More news coverage indicates that at least one vehicle had lost control beforehand.
But officers will presumably conduct an in-depth investigation fully with the intent of identifying the suspect, relying on forensic evidence and witness statements to establish if any portion of that is actually a crime. The road safety problem is only going to get worse.
Road Safety is a clear issue in Indonesia, which should be addressed after the disaster. Indonesia was a country that experienced a lot of heavy vehicle accidents across the country, especially in a few parts of Indonesia. It could also be a chance for government departments to reconsider their safety measures and enforcement so that such a thing doesn't happen again. It’s an agonising lesson for each of us, though even more unbearable as rescue units continue seeking cover for the wounded, as well as the relatives of those who died.
