Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be laid to rest next to the Imam Reza shrine in the holy city of Mashhad, fulfilling what has long been his long-held last wish. His funeral will bring the six-day funeral procession to a close in the city of Mashhad and take thousands of mourners to other Shia holy cities in neighbouring Iraq.
According to Iranian state media, Khamenei had expressed his wish to be buried near the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Shia Islam and one of the most venerated spiritual figures. Mashhad, where the shrine is located, is also Khamenei's hometown, making it very important for him to be buried there both as a person and a religious place.
Khamenei was reported to have been killed by US-Israeli strikes on February 28, a period of dramatic escalation of tension in the Middle East. His funeral was officially conducted on July 3 at Tehran's Grand Mosalla prayer complex, where large crowds gathered to pay their respects.
According to the schedule, a massive funeral procession will be carried through the streets of Tehran on July 6, before the cortege continues on to the holy city of Qom. It will then proceed to the historic Shia pilgrimage cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq before returning to Iran for the final burial in Mashhad on July 9.
The decision to bury Khamenei in the Imam Reza Shrine is symbolic of Shia Islam. Imam Reza is the eighth Imam and Shia Muslims believe he is one of the divinely guided successors of Prophet Muhammad. Shia Muslims believe the Imams have inherited the Prophet’s spiritual, moral and intellectual leadership and so are at the center of Islamic history and theology.
The Imam Reza Shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage locations in the Shia Muslim world. The huge complex is situated in Mashhad in northeastern Iran and draws millions of pilgrims and tourists every year from around the world. Besides its religious significance, the shrine is considered to symbolize compassion, hope and spiritual guidance in Iranian culture.
Khamenei's burial near the shrine is a fitting site to honour his last wish and also to reflect his lifelong religious faith and close ties to his birthplace. The site has long been associated with the late Supreme Leader and is cherished by many of his supporters.
The funeral ceremonies are expected to be attended by top Iranian officials, religious leaders and mourners from across the region. The events also come at a time of more geopolitical tension after Khamenei’s reported death and global attention on Iranian politics and the implications of the leadership transition.
For many Iranians, the burial at the Imam Reza Shrine is not only a fulfillment of Khamenei’s personal desire but also a national moment and a symbol of a connection between one of the country’s most powerful leaders and one of Shia Islam’s holiest places.
