The road accident on Dubai's Emirates Road killed seven people, including some Indian workers, and left nine others injured on Monday morning. A minibus carrying workers collided with a truck, which apparently crashed in the middle of the road due to a technical failure.
According to initial findings from Dubai Police, the truck had stopped suddenly on the busy road after problems occurred. The minibus behind the vehicle was unable to move to avoid the obstruction, and an ugly rear-end collision between the minibus and the truck resulted in extensive damage and casualties for the minibus.
The accident took place on Emirates Road, which is one of the UAE’s main highways connecting several emirates and carries heavy daily traffic. Photographs from Dubai authorities that showed the minibus in a catastrophic state showed the force of the hit.
Seven Dead, Several Critically Injured
The deadly crash killed seven people, many of whom were Indian workers commuting to their workplace. Nine other passengers were injured in the accident.
According to officials, five of the injured victims remain in critical condition, and four others have minor injuries. Emergency services were on the scene quickly and brought all the injured people to nearby hospitals immediately to treat them.
The identities and nationalities of all victims have not yet been officially released. However, Indian Consulate and Embassy officials in the UAE have confirmed that Indian nationals were among those killed and injured in the accident.
Indian Embassy Extends Support
The Indian Embassy in the UAE expressed condolences to the families of those affected by the accident. Embassy officials said they were closely working with local authorities on the matter (see X).
The embassy confirmed that its representatives had visited hospitals to meet injured Indian nationals and ensure they got necessary assistance. And officials assured every possible assistance would be provided to the victims and their families during this difficult time.
We are working closely with local authorities and extending all possible assistance to the affected Indian nationals, the embassy said in its statement.
Dubai Police highlight Safety Concerns
Brigadier Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan, Dubai Police Director of the Traffic Department, expressed his deepest sorrow at the loss of lives and stressed road safety regulations.
He said stopping a car in the middle of a road is one of the most dangerous traffic violations and has some fatal consequences on high-speed highways.
According to Dubai traffic laws, motorists who stop their vehicles in a manner that obstructs traffic may face a fine of AED 1,000 and 6 traffic black points on their driving record. A separate fine of AED 500 can be imposed for causing traffic obstruction.
Investigation Underway
The accident is still under investigation, and the truck’s mechanical failure and whether safety precautions were put in place after the vehicle became immobilised were part of the investigation, said officials.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about highway safety, vehicle maintenance, and the importance of keeping a safe following distance while driving. Road safety experts tell us that drivers should be attentive in all situations and leave a gap between vehicles to respond to sudden obstacles on the road.
The victims' families are in the same situation, and the investigation is ongoing to keep them updated. There shall be no more such incidents in the future, and so this has all but made it clear that we will not want to see a repeat of this in any case.
