But before packing your bags, things one must do that one cannot avoid doing: study for the required tests. Test forms for this method can generally be divided into two types based on course and studying mode English (English proficiency testing / academic/ job-use, i.e. entrance).

English Proficiency Tests

English is used as the language of instruction at universities across Australia which shows that you need to be proficient in the English language. Undergraduate studies usually demand a band score of 6.0 - 6.5, no below 6.0 sections.

  • PTE Academic – It is the test at all Australia’s universities. The upside is that results are usually quicker than IELTS.
  • TOEFL iBT – It is one more international test that’s approved by universities. Degree requirements vary widely among institutions, so just ask for the exact circumstances with the degree.
  • Cambridge English (CAE) – The qualification, approved in some universities instead of IELTS or TOEFL.

Pro tip: And while your education may have been in English before, some universities will also require an official test score, so do not skip this step.

Standard Academic, or Entry-Level, Assessments

Other than English there are subjects that should have an extra entrance test in certain programs for work or academia. And they tend to be dependent on your grade level or what type of discipline you’re taking.

  • SAT/ACT: Mostly for undergraduates. No scores are mandatory for the vast majority of Australian universities, but scores can be valuable in the competitive market — particularly where it comes to universities.
  • GRE / GMAT: Programs in business, management and research for graduate students would most often require this type of exam. GMAT is the choice for business courses as well as GRE for other programs.
  • UCAT / LSAT / GAMSAT: Students majoring in higher education would probably receive specialized degrees, for example, in medicine, law, and graduate health programs. Just double-check what your course is really in need of.

Final Tips

Make sure to check university-specific requirements. Each university may have a different score or accepted test requirement for students studying there.

  • Schedule ahead. A number of exams might take you weeks to prepare for, and longer to get results from a test.
  • Study hard. The more chances you have to obtain the correct score and possibly beat or even exceed that score if only one day your score is good enough, the earlier it is in your plans.

Going through these tests can be intimidating, but clearing those tests lays the foundations for studying in one of the world’s most flourishing, vibrant nations. Soon, you can take your dream into study, if you do your homework, for the first semester of studying in Australia!
