Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was said to have been killed after an airstrike targeted his house in the Narmak district of eastern Tehran. The strike is part of a large current Israel- and US-led military operation dubbed "Operation Roaring Lion" and "Operation Epic Fury," respectively.
The Strike on Narmak
According to state reports from the Iran Labor News Agency (ILNA) as well as several international outlets, the 69-year-old former leader was at home when it was struck late Saturday or early Sunday. Allegedly, the attack had killed Ahmadinejad and several of his bodyguards. Although some close colleagues initially refused to take account, terming these reports "false," major regional news networks and international monitors have recently pointed to Iranian state media confirming his death. Neither the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) nor the White House has released any statements specifically naming Ahmadinejad, although they have documented that “high-value targets” were struck in the course of the campaign.
A Regime in Chaos
Ahmadinejad’s reported death comes less than 24 hours after the confirmed killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a separate strike on his compound. Its impact on Iran’s political and spiritual leadership has left the country in a posture of vulnerability it had never experienced before. “The Islamic Republic is drawing its final breaths,” stated Prince Reza Pahlavi in a message after the strikes as internal discord starts to flare alongside externally imposed military pressure.
Context: The 2026 Conflict
The strikes, which launched Feb. 28, 2026, consisted of more than 200 fighter jets, B-2 stealth bombers, and Tomahawk missiles. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz described the operation as a “pre-emptive attack” to rid itself of existential threats. In retaliation, Iran has attacked Israel and U.S.-linked targets in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait with hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones.
Legacy of a Firebrand
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, former president of Iran, 2005-2013. His term was marked with:
- Nuclear Escalation: How quickly Iran's uranium enrichment program accelerated.
- Hardline Rhetoric: Constantly calling for the "erasure" of Israel and denials of the Holocaust.
- Domestic Churn: Following his contested re-election, the 2009 "Green Movement" protests took their place.
- Political Turn: In recent years he has moved towards the edge of power, often as a populist critic of the ruling elite present there in power.
