Germany Lifts Airport Transit Visa for Indian Travelers Effective June 3, 2026

Germany has announced that Indian citizens will no longer need an airport transit visa for airside layovers at airports, effective June 3, 2026, in a big win for thousands of Indian flyers.

The waiver is for those traveling through major German hubs like Frankfurt and Munich, if the final destination is outside the Schengen area. The German Embassy in Delhi made this announcement, and the waiver is effective for the travel of passengers in Germany in the future as well as those traveling to Germany as part of the departure destinations.

In January 2026, Merz and Modi had a high-level meeting in Berlin. The visa exemption is part of a broader effort to ease travel, strengthen bilateral relations, and boost economic cooperation. By removing the bureaucracy of a transit visa, Germany is trying to position itself as a transit point of departure for Indians traveling outside Europe’s border-free zone.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has welcomed the move, calling it an important step and a welcome boost to the people-to-people connection. The decision would benefit Indian students, professionals, and non-resident Indians (NRIs) who frequently travel from Delhi to New York and often do so through layovers at German airports, they said.

Previously, Indian passport holders were required to obtain an airport transit visa (ATV) despite not leaving the international transit zone of a German airport. Such a requirement led to more paperwork, costs, and planning complications. The new waiver brings these hurdles to a halt and is much quicker.

The policy change will also benefit German carriers, like Lufthansa, which fly long-haul flights from India to the Americas. It is in line with Berlin’s bigger strategy to increase economic and diplomatic engagement with New Delhi as both nations seek to have greater trade and investment links.

For Indian travelers, the message is clear: from June 3 onward, a layover in Germany will no longer come with a visa stopover.
