Canadian authorities are investigating a gunfire incident near the United States Consulate in Toronto after multiple shots were fired at the building early Tuesday morning, raising serious security concerns. Officials have described the attack as “absolutely unacceptable” and launched a national-security level probe into the incident.
What Happened at the US Consulate?
According to Toronto police, the shooting occurred at around 4:30 a.m. local time near the consulate building in downtown Toronto. Two individuals reportedly stepped out of a white SUV and fired several handgun rounds toward the consulate before fleeing the scene.
Investigators later recovered shell casings and evidence of gunfire, and the building’s exterior showed signs of damage. Despite the shots being fired while people were inside, no injuries were reported because the consulate is heavily fortified.
Suspects and Ongoing Investigation
Police believe the suspects used a white Honda CR-V-type vehicle and are currently searching for the individuals involved. Authorities have not yet identified the shooters or determined their motive.
The investigation is being treated as a possible national security incident, with Toronto Police working alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and other federal agencies. The United States government is also coordinating with Canadian authorities.
Possible Motives Being Examined
While the motive remains unclear, investigators are exploring several possibilities. The attack comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions linked to conflicts in the Middle East, which have triggered protests outside the U.S. consulate in recent weeks.
Authorities are also examining whether the incident could be connected to recent gunfire attacks at synagogues in the Toronto area, though officials say no direct link has been confirmed so far.
Officials Condemn the Attack
Canadian leaders strongly condemned the incident. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree described the shooting as “absolutely unacceptable,” emphasizing that violence or intimidation against diplomatic facilities will not be tolerated.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford also called it an “unacceptable act of violence and intimidation” targeting American partners and allies.
Security Tightened Across Diplomatic Sites
Following the attack, authorities have increased security at U.S. and Israeli diplomatic missions in Toronto and Ottawa to prevent further incidents.
Officials say there is no immediate threat to the public, but the investigation is ongoing and security agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
