According to Vijayapura City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, the average value of business conducted through the raisin trading system has increased from around ₹5 crore to ₹12 crore.

The growth has been called a positive thing for raisin growers, particularly at a time when farmers are looking for better prices and greater transparency in agricultural markets.

Online trading aims to reduce middlemen's influence

The online marketplace was developed to make raisin transactions more transparent and minimize the influence of intermediaries.

In a digital auction system, a larger number of buyers can potentially participate in the bidding process. Greater participation can certainly improve competition and will potentially enable farmers to fetch better prices for their produce.

For raisin growers, the final price depends on quality, quantity, storage conditions, market demand, and the number of buyers participating in an auction.

A transparent bidding system can help to ensure that these factors are reflected more clearly in the final transaction price.

Business value increases from ₹5 crore to ₹12 crore

Vijayapura’s online raisin market had faced some concerns at the start of its early days, with farmers not getting the benefit of a transparent digital trading system.

Yatnal said such concerns were addressed in a recent meeting and directions were given to the parties involved in the trading process.

After such measures, the value of business was said to have increased greatly.

From ₹5 crore to ₹12 crore, the trading activity has increased, and the marketplace may be drawing more participation.

But the total value of transactions alone does not necessarily determine whether farmers are benefiting. The actual prices received by growers, transaction costs, commissions and payment timelines are equally important indicators of the system's effectiveness.

Allegations Over Private Associations

Another issue raised in connection with the raisin market is private associations.

There have been allegations that some private groups formed their own associations and introduced rules outside the formal APMC framework.

The allegations are that limited participation in auctions would result in weaker competition between buyers and the prices offered to farmers.

Some produce was bought at lower prices, and thus the growers suffered losses, they added.

Such allegations must be investigated through appropriate regulatory mechanisms and the concerned private associations and traders should also be allowed to present their position.

For farmers to have confidence in the system, auction procedures, eligibility criteria and transaction rules must be clearly defined and uniformly enforced.

Cold Storage Charges Become Another Concern

Storage costs are another important issue for raisin growers.

Based on the concerns raised by Yatnal, farmers who store their produce in cold-storage facilities have been required to pay storage charges. A 2% commission after the sale of the produce has also been mentioned as a concern.

Farmers already bear several costs, from cultivation, harvesting, processing, transportation, packaging, and storage.

Additional charges may decrease their final earnings, especially when the market prices are weak.

Therefore, all charges associated with storage and trading should be clearly disclosed to farmers before transactions take place.

How Online Trading Can Help Farmers

One of the biggest advantages of an online marketplace is the possibility of bringing more buyers into the auction process.

Traditional markets may have a limited number of buyers at a time. A digital platform can expand access, and traders from different locations can participate.

And digital records can help with accountability.

Information regarding product quality, quantity, auction bids, final prices, and transactions can be captured electronically, so it is easier to monitor the market and identify irregularities.

The more market information farmers have, the better they will be able to plan when and where to sell their produce.

Vijayapura’s Importance in Raisin Production

Vijayapura is one of Karnataka’s key grape-growing areas and has a critical role in raisin production.

Producing fresh grapes into raisins provides farmers with another way to market their produce. But profitability is heavily influenced by market prices, processing costs, storage facilities and demand.

The competition can therefore help growers to increase the value of a trading platform.

The rise in business activity from ₹5 crore to ₹12 crore is encouraging, but the future success of the system will depend on whether the benefits reach farmers directly.

What Needs To Happen Next?

And stakeholders could focus on several areas to drive the online raisin market.

More buyers should be encouraged to participate in digital auctions. Farmers must get information on auction prices and market demand promptly. Quality testing should be strengthened, and all commissions, storage charges and other fees should be clearly disclosed.

The same is true for transparent payment systems.

The ultimate objective should not just be to increase the total value of transactions, but to ensure that farmers get competitive prices with minimum unnecessary costs and maximum transparency.

Farmer welfare should remain the priority

Farmers remain the most important players in the agricultural marketing chain. If the online marketplace takes on the role of reducing the need for intermediaries, increasing buyer participation and facilitating price discovery, it could become a model for raisin trading in Vijayapura.

The increase in business from ₹5 crore to ₹12 crore shows that the market is gaining momentum.

But success will be sustained on the basis of transparency, fair competition, reasonable charges and timely payments.

If these elements are maintained, Vijayapura's online raisin trading platform could provide growers with a more efficient route to market and possibly strengthen the economic position of one of Karnataka's important agricultural communities.
